I just cannot stop asking you guys questions, lately. So let me know if it seems like I’m just badgering you constantly. Deal?

So I’m assuming we’ve all been in this situation where everyone seems to love something but you just can’t wrap your head around it. That’s how I feel about coffee. Everyone loves coffee. “It’s an acquired taste!” How stupid is that? Why acquire a taste for something you don’t need?

Anyway, we’ve all got those shows that are ridiculously loved or popular that you sit through and say, “Really? This?So what are some shows you don’t like, but everyone else seems to just love? Here are a few of mine, and I’m sure you’ll think lesser of me after you finish reading this.

You. Don’t. Like. Lost!? It’s the best. show. ever. ever ever ever!” is the reaction I usually get whenever I tell someone that I don’t like Lost. My 11th grade English teacher once hit me over this. Literally.

Look, I’ve sat through the Lost pilot three times. Yes, “sat through” as in it was a chore for me to have to sit down for an hour watching it. Once was willfully. The other two times were not. I’ve also caught a couple of other episodes in syndication — and I just don’t see the appeal. And I certainly don’t think it’s the best show ever.

But I feel the same with Once Upon a Time, so I’m beginning to think that me and the creators’ storytelling just don’t jive.

Family Guy

Actually, I don’t hate Family Guy. I don’t “hate” any show, really. I don’t even dislike Family Guy. Perhaps what I mean to say is that its quality has degraded steeply this past season — and yet everyone just continues to rave on (plus the ratings are still as high as ever). The much-better American Dad! still gets bupkis and The Simpsons which has seen a creative resurgence in the last season and a half gets nothing as well.

Meanwhile, Family Guy airs the most awkward 30 minutes of my life, a domestic abuse episode, and its ratings just rise.

Phineas and Ferb

Continuing with the cartoons… I’m pretty sure Phineas and Ferb has been touted as the best cartoon show of all time by everyone and their mothers — literally, because it’s also been touted as the best family show on television currently. I’ve watched a handful of episodes and I just don’t get it.

It’s not that great for me. But I understand everyone else loves it. I just don’t know why. Personally, I think there are some better options for the entire family to watch on TV (perhaps not lately, but of all time, I mean really?)!

Dancing With the Stars

It’s not hopefuls winning a lifetime dream. It’s not for charity. It’s just has-beens dancing for three months to win a trophy. And it’s dominated so many Monday nights while others have suffered. I don’t ever wish a show to be cancelled, because that’s stupid, but I don’t get the appeal one bit.

What about you? What shows do other people just love but you can’t see their appeal at all?

  • haha.. i’m with you on LOST! I don’t get why others seem to really like the show.. I think it’s boring. 🙁

but i like Family Guy, it’s funny in an adult kinda way (don’t know how to express it!!) but i do find it funny, 🙂

    • I’m not the only one who hates Lost!!! Or rather, was just bored by it!? Yes! And I love me some Family Guy… lately… not really.

      • Guest

awwww clearly Lost wasnt meant for you, little buddy

ya have to actually be SMART to watch and appreciate it, either that or you watched it anyway and were one of those losers who said the finale SUCKED WAH WAH WAH when in reality just didnt want to admit you couldnt follow it. sorry a f’n tv show is so hard to follow, oh my how challenging! XD

you just stick with your endless awful borefests of crappy drug, pathetic mafia bosses and generic crime cop dramas. yno, the ACTUAL worst things on tv!

        youre welcome ; )

        • LOL OMG I never knew this comment existed. This is hilarious.

  • Two-Headed Sex Beast

    I hate Friends.

    • Well you two-headed sex beast, I would like to say I have all 10 seasons of Friends and respectfully disagree.

      • MiaDolceBella

Friends is terrible. It was good for a while, but it really just gets old. The characters are just so annoying.

        • Season 8 is the best season for me. But I understand, I’ve had a lot of people tell me they hate Friends XD

          • MiaDolceBella

Well, I got sick of it around season 7 so maybe it gets better:)

    • Ana Muller

      how? whaa…? i don’t…

  • you hate LOST? Mike!!!! That’s not at all possible! you’ve obviously been seating in the wrong… SEAT, or something!

  • I feel the exact same way about Family Guy. I used to really enjoy it, but now it’s like… I also do adore American Dad.

I don’t know about hate, but I feel like I should like The Vampire Diaries a lot more than I do. Vampires, werewolves, CW-pretty actors? Check, check, and check. Still, I always just feel a little cold towards it. Then there is the Super Bowl and sports in general…

  • Jen

I’m totally with you on Dancing With the Stars. The dancing isn’t even usually quality. It is cheesy beyond all reason and I rarely care about any of the celebrities.

  • mocha

Glee. Glee is fucking stupid and I don’t understand the appeal at all. So much inconsistency in characterization, plot, etc.

  • ::yeap, yeap..i am sooooo with you on LOST..the name suits it just well..i was lost after watching the 1st three epi’s of season 1..and i was convincing myself that it was goooood while watching it , since all the reviews said so…other than that…er..well, i might get a kick in the ass for this..er..how i met your mother..BUT..i am going to get the 1st season ASAP, okay ?::

  • American Idol. Ugh. I cannot stand that show. Enough already. Get it off the air!! I also really don’t like Survivor and I never watched Lost so I don’t know if I hate it but I don’t plan on watching it. Ever.

  • Lisa

The bachelor/bachellorette. I dont even know why that show is still on air. The couples never make it anyway!! Ugh that show is so stupid!!!!!

  • Kirsty

I have tried so many times to watch Glee as everyone raves about it but it makes me cringe & feel so uncomfortable I simply can’t understand how anyone puts up with it!

  • Lost, House, Gossip Girl, Glee, American Horror Story, The Secret Circle, Two and a Half Men, The Secret Life of the American Teenager, The Voice.. I’m sure there’s more but those just came to mind right now 😀

  • The Secret Circle:
I was really excited about it when it was announced as a TV show on The CW. But then I watched the Pilot and I was like “Meh…” and “Perhaps it’s gonna get better…” However, after the second episode, I gave up on it even though everybody was gushing about it being the hottest new show. I gave it a try for episode 11 but nothing improved IMO. So I won’t be watching it anymore.

There’s also a few others which I have never watched, being put off by their promos and reviews only: American Horror Story, Glee, Desperate Housewives…

  • MiaDolceBella

How I Met Your Mother and Big Bang Theory. In the former I hate Ted and he’s the main character so…but I still watch it for Barney, Lily and Marshall. In the latter I hate Leonard and Raj and Howard and Penny, but I love Sheldon and one out of 10 times it’s got some funny elements so I still watch it. But honestly, I only really watch either because my sister does. I just hate sitcoms.

  • Kneelb4todd

I promised a friend I would watch the first season of Lost… and gave up right after Ian Somerhalder died. Like, the only empathetic character (to me) is dead? I’m impressed with myself for holding on that long. Whatevs, joke’s on them; he’s immortal now. BUT I THOUGHT IT WAS JUST ME FOR THE LONGEST TIME.

Same problem with Battlestar Galactica. And Mad Men. Maybe I just don’t like shows with morally ambiguous characters who whine about their moral ambiguity.

  • Eric Pharand

I like Phineas and Ferb besides the musical numbers.

  • Michelle

I love Phineas and Ferb 🙂

  • Neil Dunsmore

To explain the appeal of Phineas and Ferb: The reason so many like it is because it’s like the cartoons Disney used to make back in the 90’s. It has actual wit to its dialog, something most Disney cartoons were lacking during that time, the songs are actually timeless for the most part (And lord knows most of the songs coming from Disney before 2009 weren’t that great by comparison) and while the show does have a repeating formula to it, it does manage to stay creative and prevent it from being too repetitive. That and all the characters are actually likable instead of annoying like, again, in most Disney cartoons around that time. If you dislike it, that’s fine. I know quite a few people who do. I’m just explaining where its appeal comes from.

  • LA

I think Firefly is very overrated. Don’t get me wrong, I love Joss Whedon! But this barely kept my attention. I did love “Serenity” the movie though.

  • Neil Dunsmore

Regarding Phineas and Ferb, yeah, as a die-hard fan of the series myself, I can honestly say I don’t put it as high as one of the greatest shows of all time, though yes, compared to a lot of comedic cartoons aimed at kids, this show has actual wit to its dialog and its characters, for the most part, are actually likable. (Not to mention role models) Though lately, I have noticed there are actually other options and that cartoons have been slowly making that comeback people wish they would but don’t seem to notice they have been. (They’re probably too distracted by the fact that there are still a few crappy cartoons airing on the same networks) I still don’t get why people don’t talk about the Thundercats reboot. Yes, I may be a brony, but even I think Thundercats deserved MUCH more recognition.

As for Family Guy, unlike you, I actually do dislike it mainly because it went from somewhat creative and able to use its pop culture references to make some clever material to ‘Hm… I can’t think of a joke right now. To the manatee tank!’ and ‘I can’t even come up with cut-away sequences and pop culture references… BRING IN THE CHICKEN!!!!!’

  • Neil Dunsmore

Oh, just realized I already responded to this… long ago… that’s embarrassing.
