If The Hunger Games were a TV Show

Since The Hunger Games comes out tomorrow and since I can’t stop thinking about the book or the movie, I got this thought. What if The Hunger Games were more than just a movie? What if it were a TV show with lots and lots of seasons that would, of course, include Catching Fire and Mockingjay?

It was just a thought at first but then it became an idea and I started pretending it were real mapping it out with show-runners, networks, and cast.

Take a look.

Network:

I would see it somewhere between FOX and The CW. Because neither CBS, NBC, or ABC would be interested in such a costly project especially that their target audience is nowhere near 18-34. Plus, if it were on Cable, not many of those who read the book, which are mainly teenagers, will get to watch it and enjoy it. So those two channels are the most perfect fit, probably the most appealing towards the young adults audience. But since it’s gonna be over-the-top expensive, I would say FOX more than CW. But then again, this is not gonna happen like ever, so.

Show-runners:

At first, Julie Plec and Kevin Williamson came to mind. I mean, puh-lease they run one of the most successful young adult shows on TV right now: The Vampire Diaries! (which is also a book adaptation!) How awesome would it be if they did run the show? They would add their gruesome twists and turns and make this book even better. (As if that’s even possible.) But then they would turn it into a shipping show, and we wouldn’t that. The best aspect about the books is that it’s MORE than just about this girl in love with two guys. (Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE Julie and Kevin.)

And then I got another thought. Damon Lindelof and JJ Abrams! The minds behind Lost. Duh! Whether you liked the show or not, you have to admit those two created a sci-fi hit like no other. They ran a masterpiece. It was expensive and time-consuming and yet they pulled it off amazingly! And if they were handed The Hunger Games franchise, I’m sure they would do it good – even better than good, great.

The problem with TV show adaptation of books is that they change some of the plots and even kill off characters that were awesome in the book as the show goes on (RIP Nick from TSC). But think about it, wouldn’t you like to see another twist on The Hunger Games? I’m so sad the franchise’s over, I need more stuff to happen. I was so heartbroken when I read “The End” as the last sentence from Mockingjay. How awesome would it be if Suzanne Collins herself was part of the writing process of the pretend TV series?

Seasons:

There are three Hunger Games books which would probably mean… three seasons? But the whole point of transforming the book into a TV show is the fact that it would last a long long time. So six seasons? Eight?

Just imagine a whole season featuring the first book, 22 episodes of sheer awesomeness. Imagine a 40-minute episode featuring their interviews, or an episode featuring Peeta and Katniss in the caves! I DIE!

Plus, in later seasons, the show can pick-up where the books left off, it could pick up right after the ending of Mockinjay. Oh, how I would love to see that!

Cast:

Since it’s a TV show, a supposed TV show that I’m making up, it would feature TV actors right? Not movie stars because that wouldn’t make sense. (As if I’m depending on sense at all to write this article)

Here are some TV stars I’d like to see in the TV show:

Katniss: Lyndsey Fonseca, she kicks ass as Alex on Nikita. Just imagine what she would do if she were Katniss.

Effie: Idina Menzel, what makes Effie stand out from the rest of District 12 is how eccentric she is. And no one can be more eccentric than the woman who played Elphaba, the Wicked Witch of the West, on Broadway.

Haymitch: Hugh Laurie, A drunk miserable bastard. Does that ring any bells?

Finnick: Grant Gustin, As I was reading Catching Fire and Mockingjay, I couldn’t help but picture him. Especially in Catching Fire when he taunted Katniss with the sugar cubes.

Johanna: Claire Holt, she’s a sassy chick everyone seems to hate but she’s in fact an awesome badass.

Glimmer: Phoebe Tonkin, read above.

Katniss’ mom: Lauren Graham, uhm she’s the most popular mom on TV! Who’d you think I would choose?

President Snow: Donald Sutherland was on TV, before, right? So yeah, I would keep him as President Snow.

Where are Peeta, Gale, Rue, Prim, and the rest? I know, I know. That’s what I said SOME. I could not picture an ideal TV star to play any of these, but your suggestions are most welcome! Please help me and tell me who should play those characters!

But to be honest, some of the most brilliant characters on TV today (or even in movies) have been portrayed by people who were otherwise unknown. So it would be interesting to see fresh faces play Peeta, Gale, or the rest.

(By the way, I LOVE the movie’s cast!)

I know I read too much into this “idea” that came to my mind. It’s never gonna happen, I know that. But I loved writing it especially that it meant killing time until the movie comes out. Just 24 more hours. 24 more hours!

What about you? Would you like to see The Hunger Games become a TV show?

Idk who i would cast as Peeta, Gale and everyone too, maybe the movie’s cast…

I just didn’t want it to be a TVD series because they would have to change so much the story to get more episodes than just, like, 3 seasons of idk 10, 12 episodes each…
But it would be awesome as well :’)

Yes! If they change some of the storylines, that would suck!

This is a cool idea! I can definitely imagine the first two books as a tv series but maybe not the third one…

As for Peeta and Gale, I think Hunter Parrish who plays Silas Botwin on weeds would be a cool Gale. (http://images4.fanpop.com/image/photos/23200000/Silas-Botwin-season-4-weeds-23245252-500-276.png

My personal choice for Katniss would be Kaya Scodelario, who played Effy on Skins. She was actually in the running to play Katniss in the movies and I was really disappointed when she didn’t get the role (http://cdn.buzznet.com/media/jjr/headlines/2011/01/kaya-scodelario-v-mag.jpg)

And your suggestions for show-runners are perfect! Julie Plec and JJ Abrams would be awesome

Wow! The Peeta choice is PERFECT! He looks exactly the way I imagine him!

And Lyndsy was my choice for Katniss, and I was disapointed as well when she didn’t get it because she, in fact, auditioned. But I think Jennifer Lawrence is gonna be a great Katniss!

      Thanks for your comment!

I love Jennifer as Katniss, now that I’ve seen the movies, because before i was not so sure… But now I think she’s perfect. BTW, anyone saw it already?

        • Heba Bsat

I watched it on Thursday and now I wanna watch it again. I was surprised how ALL the cast fit their roles perfectly.

But yeah, Jennifer Lawrence was pretty awesome. She’s definitely the best Katniss out there!

This would suck! There is no way that anyone but Jennifer Lawrence is playing katniss. Its just too dumb. We already saw the movie. Isn’t that enough?? Typically books aren’t a series due to the limited amount (3 books) of sources. But shows like modern family come from writers’ minds, which are unlimited, thus allowing a veeeeeery long series time. (15+ years). And “the hunger games” TV series would last 3 years or less
