Once Upon a Time: Ten Burning Questions

Ever since Once upon a Time started, it created this sort of mystery the writers perfected in Lost. With the end of each episode, we’re so intrigued that we’d start asking a thousand questions. We would just want more; we would want to know more.  And after the midseason finale, which aired December 10, lots of new questions came up. I really hope we get the answers by the end of the first season because the suspense is killing me:

1- When will Emma believe Henry? To be honest, I think a part of her already believes him, but her cynical side just won’t allow it. In a way, she believes her mom is Mary Margaret (aka Snow White)  and that her dad is David (Prince Charming). Remember when she asked Mary Margaret who Henry thinks she is? Mary Margaret answered, “Snow White. Why? Who does he think you are?” Emma’s face was unreadable; she was stunned. How about the cinnamon hot cocoa? C’mon, Emma. You know you believe it. You know you want to believe it. But are you going to believe it anytime soon? ‘Cause we’re dying over here!

2- How will Graham’s death affect Emma? Emma put in a lot of effort to finally open up to someone, to Graham. With his loss, she won’t be the same person again.  And if there’s a part of her that believes the curse is true, a part of her is bound to believe that Regina (The Evil Queen) killed him. Will that make her want to avenge his death? Will Graham’s death enhance the battle between Emma and Regina and make it even deeper than the fight over whose son Henry is? Will they become the ultimate enemies they were set out to be because of Graham’s death?

3- How did Snow White betray The Evil Queen? In the midseason finale, we learned that The Evil Queen hated Snow White because she had revealed a secret The Queen had confided her with. What was that secret? Why did Snow White reveal it? And to whom did she reveal it?

4- Why did Mr.Gold bring Henry to Regina? This is a question I’ve been asking since episode 2, “The Thing You Love the Most.” It was revealed in that episode that Mr.Gold (Rumpelstiltskin) brought Henry to Regina so that Henry can someday find Emma and she can save them from the curse. But why does he want to be saved? Rumpelstiltskin had begged The Evil Queen to give him a nice, decent life in Storybrooke. He wanted this life, so why does he want to be saved by Emma?

5- How was Henry aging? So apparently, all the characters lives’ have been the same for 28 years since The Evil Queen cursed them to Storybrooke; time was not passing. David had been in a coma for 28 years. Regina has been mayor for 28 years. And none of them is growing up. So how is Henry aging? Regina adopted him as a baby and now he’s 10 years old. Is there a loophole or something?

6- Why is Emma STILL wearing that red jacket? If there’s anything I learned about the writers through watching Lost is that they don’t do anything just cause. They always have an ulterior motive. So what is their ulterior motive here? What’s the point of the red jacket?

7- Is Storybrooke actually Fairytale? Remember in episode 5, “That Still Small Voice,” how Henry wanted to search for the remains of Fairytale in the mine where he and Archie got stuck? And remember how Regina found something and then threw it in the mine so no one would see it? Does that mean that Storybrooke is in fact Fairytale but changed due to the curse?

8- Who was Emma Swan before Storybrooke? We know nothing about her background except that she was a bail bondsman bail bondsperson. We have no idea how she lived or with whom she lived now or while growing up. She mentioned that she had a relationship with a married man when she was advising Mary Margaret to stay away from Dave, so who is he? Emma is definitely one of my favorite characters on the show, so I really want to more about her past. Don’t you?

9- How did Snow White marry Prince Charming when The Evil Queen wanted her dead? When Snow White and Prince Charming had met, Snow was living in the woods hiding from The Evil Queen who wanted to rip her heart out of her chest – literally. So how did she marry a Prince in public and attend galas and balls with The Evil Queen still on the hunt for her?

10How will the writers continue the show after the curse is removed? The writers have clearly stated that they intend on revoking the curse by the end of the first season because the point of the show is to discover each character as a whole not the just how the curse affected them. But the question is: how? How will Gennifer Goodwin who’s almost as old as Jennifer Morrison play her mom when time is actually passing?  How will Josh Dallas play her father? (Genni is actually only 11 months older than Jen and Josh is two years younger.) Will they make them older with makeup or will they leave it be somehow? Where would they live, in Fairytale or in Storybrooke? Will Emma and Henry have their very own fairytale characters if in fact they’re living in Fairytale? The way the writers answer these questions is the way they’re going to lead the second season, so I really hope they don’t disappoint and ruin my favorite show.

What about you? What OUaT questions are killing you?

  • Oh, I can talk Once with you. My thoughts:

    2. GRAHAM ISN'T DEAD. I refuse to believe this. If he is, Emma better find out who's to blame and kick that witch's assss.

    3. Yeah, this is the big mystery right now! What did Snow do? Was it really that bad? So far I'm loving this show's classic take on things like good vs. evil and true love. There are enough morally ambiguous characters/shows in TVdom, I think I'm going to be a little disappointed if it turns out Snow was awful and the Queen is just misunderstood. :P I do love getting more in depth in what makes characters what they are though, so I'm sure it will be good!

    4. I don't think Mr. Gold wanted the curse to happen, I think he just knew it would happen so he wanted to get in on it so it wouldn't be as bad for him. He has a lot of insight and likes to manipulate the events around him, sometimes just to see them unfold I think. His motivations are ultimately self-serving, but there's also an element of liking to cause mischief and see how it plays out imho. I don't think he's on the side of good or evil.

    5. Henry isn't from FTL, neither is Emma. So I don't think either one of them is directly affected by the curse.

    9. I would think Snow's alliance with the Prince would protect her from the Queen. Not quite sure how different realms/kingdoms work exactly, but I think marrying the Prince takes her pretty much out of the Queen's jurisdiction. She's out of the Queen reach...until the Queen curses all of FTL of course.

    10. Another really big question. I didn't realize they said the curse would be lifted...and I do wonder what that entails. Don't know what the dynamic of this show is if it doesn't take place in both FTL and Storybrooke, I'm kind of nervous. Especially considering how Lost turned out...this show has such a good thing going right now, I hope they're able to either keep it up or end the series when it comes to a natural end.

  • 4, 5, 8 and 10 are the questions I constantly wondered!! Those are the four I want revealed the most!

  • I can answer number 6. Emma wears a red jacket because she is/will become Rose Red. And she definitely is a fairytale character of sorts, as Henry implied she wasn't ready to know who she is.

  • Number 8 has been answedr in the beginning... emma swan is snow whites daughter and hernys mother. Both are not affected by curse.

  • 8. During the pilot episode we learn a little bit more about Emma such as she was left on the side of the road, which is because that's where the wardrobe placed her, not her parents. Also Emma had a foster family but when she was 3 she was put back in foster care because the family had a child of their own. Since then Emma lived in foster care and moves from place to place.

Also I have another question, what does the queen know about Henry? Why does she want him so bad? Why does she not want him to have contact with Emma? I have a feeling it's not just because the queen is protecting her "son".
