SAG Awards: Why was Homeland snubbed?

This post is long overdue, but I only saw the list of nominees for the SAG Awards, which will be held on January 29, yesterday. And my first reaction was: WHERE THE HELL IS HOMELAND?

It’s no secret that Homeland is probably one of the best TV series today (by my calculation), if not the VERY best. It attracted critics and audience alike, clinging them to the screen episode after episode. There’s honestly no other show that can compete with its excellence and intensity. Homeland is the ideal example of “quality television.”

The actors’ performances were awe-striking. Claire Danes was heartbreaking as the bipolar CIA agent trying to out Brody. She made us cry and scream. In every scene, she gave more than her all. She was impeccable to say the least. And what about the  incredible Damian Lewis? He made us sympathize with him even though we knew we shouldn’t. We fell in love with him even when we didn’t want to. He was brilliant in Homeland. They all were.

At the Golden Globes, the show was nominated for the three major TV Awards: Claire Danes was nominated for Best Actress in a TV Series – Drama, Damian Lewis was nominated for Best Actor in a TV Series – Drama, and Best TV Series – Drama. And surprising no one, the show won for Best Series and Claire Danes won for Best Actress.

Some critics are already saying that Claire Danes will win the Emmy next September and so will the show. (Maybe Damian Lewis, also.)

So the only award show left? Screen Actors Guild Awards. The shock? The show was not nominated AT ALL. No Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series nomination. (HUH?!). No Outstanding Performance by an Actress in a Drama Series nomination. And No Outstanding Performance by an Actor in a Drama Series nomination.

• Kathy Bates – Harry’s Law as Harriet “Harry” Korn
• Glenn Close – Damages as Patty Hewes
• Jessica Lange – American Horror Story as Constance Langdon
• Julianna Margulies – The Good Wife as Alicia Florrick
• Kyra Sedgwick – The Closer as Brenda Leigh Johnson

Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series

• Boardwalk Empire
• Breaking Bad
• Dexter
• Game of Thrones
• The Good Wife

So someone please explain to me how Glenn Close, Kathy Bates, and Kyre Sedgwick are nominated but Claire Danes isn’t. Or why Patrick J. Adams (WHO?) replaced Damian Lewis. Or why Dexter was nominated instead of Homeland.

It’s like the actors who voted at the SAG Awards chose veterans over who’s actually worthy. It seems like they made their assessment according to reputation or last year’s Emmys. Let’s face it, actors don’t watch TV. Their ego is too huge to watch someone other than them kick ass on screen. Or at least, that’s what I’d like to think as to why they purposefully snubbed Homeland and its spectacular ensemble who honestly deserves all the awards.

My advice to those who chose to neglect Homeland is that they actually watch TV before voting. Watch Homeland. Watch these actors kill it in every single scene. Watch them as they make you cry and leave you at the edge of your seat every single episode. That’s an ensemble worth of honoring. It’s an ensemble that deserves everyone’s respect and admiration. You’re idiots (I apologize for my language) for ignoring them.
