America’s Next Top Model recap: a trip to Canada!

Oh boy, the girls are going on castings this week! How will the rookie Americans handle it? I can’t wait to find out.

The show started off with the girls complaining again about Kyle still being there. Please, not another week of her whining! Please Tyra, please! Thankfully, the bitter feelings are pushed aside when the girls get a video message from Jay telling them that they are going to Canada for Toronto fashion week! Eeek! The girls have to quick pack their bags and their profiles and hop a jet. Runways await them!

Once they are in Canada, Jay sends them out on a casting challenge and whichever girl books the most shows wins. There are nine designers (including Jay) and the girls all take their turn strutting their stuff (in front of all the other girls) and they find out right then and there who books a show and who doesn’t. This is not like the usual go-see episodes of seasons past, even though at first glance it kind of seems like it. I don’t know about you, but it pretty much ruins the drama for me.

Finally, after a little pit stop with the zero-bookings pity party, we get to Jay’s casting. Who knew he was a designer? (Actually I think I did all the way in the back of my mind, but that is neither here nor there). Since both Eboni and Sophie booked four shows, the winner of the challenge is decided by who does better walking in the show that night.

But wait! It’s not rainbows and sunshine for all the girls that booked shows. Sophie, Laura and Kyle are at rehearsal for their show when the show manager basically tells Laura and Kyle that they weren’t up to par and could ruin the whole show, so they were cut. That is the fashion industry for you, easy come easy go.

At the shows, the girls who aren’t walking are bitter and the girls who are in the shows are basking in their luck. But they all get to go back to the elaborate hotel suite they are staying in a wait for news of their photo shoot, which will apparently involve sweets.

At the photo shoot, Jay announces that both Eboni AND Sophie will be the challenge winners, since they both did so well in the runway shows. Good for them. They get a Jay Manual dress and a trip back to Canada. Quite the prize!

For the photos, the girls will be covered in maple syrup. How location appropriate! Although it does appear to be a bit sticky and gross. Suddenly, we hear Laura’s story about her recently deceased friend that we have never before…except for 15 minutes ago in this episode. And now that she is struggling in the competition it is really affecting her. Foreshadowing that she will go home? Perhaps. We have also been hearing about Ashley and how she misses her kids, so she could be in trouble too.

I love how catty the judges are being this season. They give all the girls relatively good critiques to their faces, but once the girls are gone the real criticisms come out. It is great.

When the girls return, Eboni is called first for her dance-like photo. Finally she is doing the ’30-never’ thing Tyra wants her to do.  Four Brits are left standing, so we know Laura isn’t going home yet. And the bottom two ends up being Catherine and Ashley because they both were unable to book any shows, but Catherine wins out with her stronger photo and Ashley is sent home. I guess now she’ll get to go home to her kids but I’m going to miss her crazy Scottish accent. She was definitely one of the more entertaining girls.

Next week the girls fight and they make a music video with Lisa, that girl who won ANTM: Allstars. I don’t know about you, but I’ll be looking forward to the girl fight!

  • The first full cycle I watched was 15. I watched 16. I only watched 17 because it was former contestants. I'm not watching anymore cycles.
