She said: The Secret Circle 1.16 ‘Lucky’ review: HIT or MISS

After an agonizing month long hiatus, (bite me CW) I was beyond thrilled for The Secret Circle to return. I was going through some serious sarcastic remark withdrawals, I mean, I haven’t made fun of Adam and Cassie’s ridiculousness in forever so I’m THRILLED to be back in action. Here are some things throughout the episode that worked, and some that didn’t.

HIT: Melissa is slowly, but surely, coming front and center. It’s no secret that she’s had to take a backseat to other characters quite often but her witty love advice to both Diana and Faye were just what the episode needed. We definitely need to keep tabs on this one; they are without a doubt setting her up for a storyline… perhaps THE storyline. Cough, other Blackwell child, cough. Let’s just say it’s nice to see Melissa taking a stand, and showing some sass even if she still happens to be piggybacking on everyone else’s storyline.

MISS: The whole daddy/daughter dynamic between Cassie and John is, how do I put it… BORING. We all have daddy issues and yes, Cassie’s are centralized around her father potentially being the root of all evil. But there’s no denying that the chemistry between the two is nothing to write home about. They might as well be strangers in passing on the street.

Blackwell has been M.I.A for 16 years, and all of a sudden he cares. All in all he seems like he is trying to protect his daughter while having a potentially evil agenda. He had a
minor temper tantrum at the abandoned house when he couldn’t find something he was looking for. We later find out that he was looking for yet another witchy accessory that can steal/give another witches magic. Daddy Blackwell claims it’s for tracking down Eben and could explain his mysterious vanishing act from last episode. But I don’t buy it. Completely off topic, Dawn seems overly excited that Blackwell is alive. Someone PLEASE get this woman a vibrator.

HIT/MISS: Diana has been one of my favorite characters from the beginning, we’ve seen her struggle with her insecurities and have seen her put up with her completely inconsiderate d-bag of a boyfriend. And here comes this dreamy Australian bloke who is without a doubt wanting to date and get into this pretty girl’s pants. I want Diana to find love with someone other than Adam, but, I can’t help but think the Chance Harbor newcomer is A. a witch hunter, B. is working with Blackwell, or C. just really horny. Okay, maybe not the latter, but… I couldn’t think of another possibility besides evil and horny.

HIT: Faye had some of the best one-liners of the season so far during this episode. Her asshole remarks to Cassie’s love struck hunks and Diana were on the top of my list of things I loved about this episode. Although I am not a big Lee fan (thank you Eva for taking care of that for me) I think that it’s a pretty decent storyline. I’m looking forward to Faye finding Lee’s dead body in Eva’s bed and Faye and Eva going head to head. Now, I don’t know if Eva had magic before she went into the coma, a part of me wants to think that she was a power sucking voodoo junkie just like Lee and Callum, but Lee seemed pretty surprised that she had magic. Could this mean she’s tapped into the circle’s mojo? Or perhaps Faye’s… cough, is Faye the other Blackwell child instead of Melissa, cough.

MISS: How does beating someone who just stabbed your father evil? I call that self-defense. After Ethan skewered Blackwell and Cassie went all Dark Magic Barbie on Ethan on the field with a bench, I was surprised to see John wanted her to stop. I mean, the girl only had a 2×4 in her hand and was fiending for some batting practice. No biggie. I understand Blackwell doesn’t want Cassie to use her dark magic… but, the whole scene was kind of stupid. Plus, afterwards, why would Ethan agree to keep Cassie’s dark magic a secret just because Blackwell asked? He’s clearly the one who betrayed the circle years ago, plus Diana’s grandma already knows she’s Satan’s spawn, she tried to kill her… it just doesn’t make sense!

HIT: FAYANA love! It’s nice to see Faye and Diana getting along. Well, they aren’t exactly sneaking smooches in the bathroom just yet, but at least they are sharing some not so terrible moments together. These two have come a long way from Junior High and I’m looking forward to seeing the friendship progress.

MISS: CADAM sex! Geesh, how long have Diana and Adam been broken up for? It seems like two months. Yes, some people have sex like the day after a breakup—but, I find it hilarious that not too long ago Adam was trying to keep Diana, telling her he loves her and blah blah blah. Now he’s professing his undying love to Cassie and they’re hitting the sheets… or should I say couch. Someone call the UHAUL, lesbian Adam’s next step is moving into Blake Manor!

Cue plot twist. Turns out Cassie and Adam’s destiny is in fact a curse, oh and hello, it’s just been activated thanks to their recent recreational activities. No one’s looking forward to that awkward ‘you had sex, and now someone in your circle will die,’ conversation next week with Cassie’s dad and the rest of the group.

How do you think Diana will react when she finds out her new bestie and her ex-boyfriend had sex? Can Faye defeat Lee’s psycho ex-girlfriend? Will someone from the Circle die at the hands of the Conant-Blake curse? Let me know your thoughts on this weeks episode of The Secret Circle in the comments below.

  • The CADAM sex was just way too much for me, seriously. But I think it's quite interesting that they're super invencible love is actually a product of a curse. Interesting and really sad. Maybe Jake was right after all: "We'll see"!

    • It really is too much too soon. I understand they want to get this curse underway but bleck. My eyes burned a little!

  • I'm sad that Lee is gone in his best moment, but maybe they can bring him back too whenever they feel like it. Right now Faye's storyline is keeping me watching the show, I just can't deal with Cassie's father or Cassie and her evil eyeliner lately.

  • The whole season is a MISS besides Faye.
I'm glad Lee's dead. The Lee/Callum/drugs subplot was a waste except for Eva and Faye having solitary power briefly/rest of the circle hurt/Faye reversing it. Eva is a better character than Blackwell and she was in a coma in half of her scenes. Eva's actually my second favorite character now. Faye/Eva hatesex? Just me? People have already suggested Fayana and SAdam/Jake so why not? It's not like the show is all that interesting anyway. The circling crows were cool.

    • Fayeall the way... Not sure I'm down for Faye/Eva hate sex... But, I don't judge. Sail your ship, sail!

  • am i seriously the ONLY person who actually like everything about the show?? i hate that nick died. i hate that lee died. dawn and charles need therapy. where the heck is cassies grandma?? is john blackwell evil or not?? i am very happy that cassie and adam are finally together and now jakes gonna die?? hopefully that wont happen!!! he had a horrible death in shark night so he doesnt need another one!!!! it sucks that cassie and adam cant be together anymore cuz of the stupid curse. but all in all i think the show gets more intense every week and i will continue to watch
