The Mob Doctor comes to Fox!

No I’m just kidding, there is no such thing as a mob doctor. It’s only a horrendous title of a new pilot!

I’ve been super busy lately. Exams, exhibitions, papers to write. You know the usual stuff. Anyway I’m back, and this time with some Fox pilot news.

Generally I’m a fan of everything Fox. Fox gave us beauty’s like Fringe, New Girl, Bones, House… But Fox can also be a pain in the ass, cancelling our favorite shows is slowly becoming their forte! What I wouldn’t do to bring back Firefly or Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles.

My impression is that this year the pick-up rate of their pilots will be slightly higher,  with the cancellations of Terra Nova, House and Breaking In (Again!) and possible cancellations of The Finder and Alcatraz. (And maybe Fringe?)

Anyway, they’ve ordered 16 pilots, five of them are drama’s and the rest of them are single-camera comedies. It’s a pretty good list, so lets see what Fox has to offer.

  • The Asset: It’s a spy/action drama about an undercover CIA agent in their New York City agency. Heroes and Resident Evil star Ali Larter gets to play the lead, Anna King, who is actually a gifted journalist photographer with a secret life as a CIA agent. Anna is in control, capable of lying, and serves as a spy-hooker. Reviews have been generally positive describing Anna as complicated but flawed. The writer and producer is Josh Friedman, also the man behind Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles. Hamish Linkalter will play the male lead.
  • Rogue: This is also a spy drama, written by Karyn Usher (Producer Bones). The orphaned 14-year old daughter of a CIA operative encounters a rogue agent/assassin who becomes her surrogate father and mentor in the spy world. Newcomer Saxon Sharbino got the role of the girl, castmates include Julien McMahon, Rick Schroder and Angela Bassett.

Both spy dramas got similar feedback and tested well.

  • Guilt: A pilot by Marc Guggenheim, a legal and revenge pilot. After being falsely convicted of fraud and stripped of his legal license, a brilliant defense attorney uses his unorthodox methods to solve cases he’s prohibited from handling, to get revenge on the man who set him up. This pilot includes stars such as Cuba Gooding Jr., Julian Morris and Jay Harrington. This one got ‘encouraging feedback’, I don’t know how positive ‘encouraging’ is but we’ll see.
  • Mastermind: This is one to get exited for, not only is this one written by the mastermind Kevin Williamson but they have also casted Kevin Bacon as the male lead. Bacon plays an ex-FBI agent who leads the search for a diabolical serial killer who has created a cult of serial killers. (Yeah a cult of serial killers!) James Purefoy got casted as the diabolical killer. You can also expect Maggie Grace, Adam Canto, Shawn Ashmore, Nathalie Zen and Jeananne Goossen. I’m sure this will get an order, after really positive reviews of screenings.
  • Mob Doctor: I hope I’m not the only one who thinks this is a really, really awful name for a show. Mob Doctor, lol. Anyway, this doctor is split between two worlds, she juggles her career as a surgeon and she has a lifelong debt to the South Chicago Mob due to her brother. Doctor Mob is played by Jordana Spiro. Cast also features William Forsythe, Jaimee Lee Kirchner, Jesse Lee Soffer and others. This got also encouraging reviews.

Don’t shoot me, but I’m going to post the comedies later this evening. Anyway, I’m really exited for another Kev Williamson project, and I can’t help but drool over Julien McMahon.  Good work, Fox!

  • The Asset and Rogue sound boring. Do we really need more CIA shows? Guilt sounds like a mash up of a lot of other shows featuring unorthodox professionals. Mob Doctor is a ridiculoussss name for a show but sounds like it has the potential to be unintentionally hilarious. Mastermind sounds cool.

  • UGH MASTERMIND SOUNDS SO GOOOOD!!! And it's made with the better half of the TVD producers' credit…so…

    • MASTERMIND sounds awesome and it's the only one that I actually care about, since the rest of them sound to me like a House-like CIA show, with the unorthodox leads and I'm honestly tired of CIA shows. Then again, Ali Larter is an amazing actress and I might give a shot to anything she puts her name on,just because of her reputation.
