Community‘s Dan Harmon replaced as showrunner, will you keep watching the show?

We knew this news was coming for days, but we just didn’t want to believe it. We shrugged it off as rumors and consoled ourselves by saying that even if he steps down as showrunner, he will be a consulting producer, because that’s what we’ve heard. And then the official news started swirling around last night. According to TVGuide, Harmon’s going to be replaced by Just Shoot Me alums and Happy Ending consulting producers Moses Port and David Guarascio.

Twitter broke down upon hearing the news pissed off by Sony’s decision to fire Harmon and replace him with new showrunners because they want to “broaden” the show. Broaden it? Community is not a broad comedy, and that’s why we love it. Why renew it if you want to alter it completely?

And then Dan Hormon posted about his situation on his Tumblr account, and our hearts broke. He’s not returning to the show at all because the new title their giving is just a formality. He would have nothing to do if he returns back to season 4. I was told not to blame NBC for the firing by some Twitter peeps, but according to Harmon’s post, NBC is to blame as well.

“I do want to correct a couple points of spin, now that I’m free to do so:

The important one is this quote from Bob Greenblatt (NBC Entertainment’s chairman) in which he says he’s sure I’m going to be involved somehow, something like that.  That’s a misquote.  I think he meant to say he’s sure cookies are yummy, because he’s never called me once in the entire duration of his employment at NBC.  He didn’t call me to say he was starting to work there, he didn’t call me to say I was no longer working there and he definitely didn’t call to ask if I was going to be involved.  I’m not saying it’s wrong for him to have bigger fish to fry, I’m just saying, NBC is not a credible source of All News Dan Harmon.”

The silver-lining is that Happy Endings had one of the best seasons on TV this year; it was funny and charming. So if Port & Guarascio had anything to do with that, not all hope is lost. But if Sony is ordering those new writers to “broaden” up the show, who knows what could happen? What if we lose all the meta on this show? What if we lose all the weirdness that has made this show what it is?

THIS is the darkest timeline, folks. My heart weeps for the show we all cheered for. There’s no telling if it’s ever gonna be the same again.
