Continuum 1×05 ‘Test Of Time’ recap: Theories, conspiracies, & grandmothers

Time travelling is a tricky business, and what started last week with Kellogg’s creepy behavior towards his grandmother continued as the bigger theme in this episode. This episode also raised a couple of questions regarding their time travelling.

The bigger question was of course: would Kiera die if her grandmother died, thus changing history. Kagame realised that none of them were safe, as long as their family members weren’t safe. So they had to murder Kiera’s grandmother to test this theory. Actually Kiera brought this whole ordeal on herself, by threatening Lukas Ingram’s family in this first episode.

Who knew how many Lilly Collinses are living in Vancouver nowadays! At first they murdered a woman who wasn’t her grandmother, only to reveal their little plan to Kiera. Who had been secretly stalking her ‘grandmother’, a girl devoted to the community. All the rest of them were brought into the police station to secure them. But there was another Lilly, her actual grandmother and a streetkid! The little streetpunk was also pregnant with a girl. (Kiera’s mother.)

Kiera proposed to Kellogg to hide Lilly on his boat, that was the one place Liber8 probably wouldn’t look. Their plan fell into the water when Kagame kidnapped Kellogg’s grandmother and proposed an exchange: Lilly for Kellogg’s grandmother and promised to hand her over, alive. Kiera and Kellogg had their own sneaky plan, they brought Kagame’s pregnant mother along to exchange her for the girl. Things were going very smoothly until Travis shot Kellog’s grandmother. Kellogg is still alive, thus so far testing their theory. I feel a fight between Kagame and Travis coming, Travis broke Kagame’s promise to Kellog and has an other approach to reaching their goal.

Lastly, Lilly told her boyfriend about her pregnancy and left with him on Kellogg’s boat. Kellog was truly bummed, anyone would be bummed if they shot your grandmother before your mother was born! This situation raised a lot of questions: Is it another timeline? Was Kellogg adopted or did the girl have a sister? Was their timeline instantly changed the moment after they time travelled to the past? Wouldn’t it be weird if Kellogg was the grandfather of Kellogg, that seems unlikely but it would be weird!

Kellog made it seem like the guards knew  what they were going to do, and suggested a huge conspiracy. Which Alec Sadler is a part of,  if you remember the first episode! This only strengthens my theory about Sadler remembering Kiera from the past, and the timeloop theory. (Kiera is born and lives her life. Then time travels to the past and lives her life while battling Liber8! In the meanwhile, Kiera’s mother is born and after that Kiera and everything happens again and again…)

See you in two weeks, because Continuum is on hiatus! (Eternal cries!)

  • Continuum slowly is becoming my favorite show of the summer.

Its amusing and awesome on just how much every "monster of the week" fits in into the overall story.

Also its nice to see the Liber8 getting depth and more of gray morality stuff added.

The show keeps reminding me of The 4400 and thats a very very VERY good thing

    • Yeah I totally agree. The 4400 is still one of my all time favorite shows btw!

    • I agree about the integration of the episodic storylines and the main storyline. Few series do this. Burn Notice and Fringe do it a bit.

I've not watched The 4400. I might watch a few episodes this summer.

  • Another great episode. It had family drama, physics of time travel, action, police work, humour, morality, twists.

    Continuum marathon on Canada Day!

    • YES!! Oh god, at first I couldn't place her. I haven't watched the killing in a long time, maybe I should watch the second season...

      • You should! I managed to enjoy it despite alllll the hate. The finale got some extra hate from critics, but I LOVED it. Especially the last 15sth minutes.
