So You Think You Can Dance 9.05 recap: Vegas Week!

The Vegas Week callbacks are always dramatic. Dancers spend days learning choreography and going through multiple auditions to earn a spot in the Top 20 to actually compete on the show. As fun as it is to see a lot of exhausted dancers cry, I’m really looking forward to meeting the Top 20 next week and my favorite talent competition that will follow. Here’s a quick recap of what we saw this week.

Solos: Vegas Week starts out with everyone repeating their solos for the judges, usually the same one we saw in their initial audition. This way the judges can compare everyone they sent to Vegas and make some initial cuts. Hampton “The Exorcist” is still amazing and made half the judges cry. They immediately cut 51 dancers, including the martial arts hip-hopper I wasn’t that into.

Hip-hop: In the hip-hop round run by Comfort and Twitch, we immediately lost Hampton as well as Andre and Boris from the Dragon House crew. They are untrained hip-hop dancers who had never been choreographed before and couldn’t keep up. Bree, the mother of two from week one, and Gene aka Praying Mantis Guy also didn’t make it past this round.

Broadway: Tyce Diorio choreographed the Broadway style audition where they drink water and it makes them all horny. I’m not kidding, that’s the concept for the dance. The two blond ballroom girls from Utah proved that ballroom dancers know how to put on a freaking performance and killed the Broadway style. Alexa, a contemporary dancer who almost made the show last year, was chastised by the judges for giving a flat performance but they kept her around.

Jazz: Sonya choreographed an aggressive jazz number (unlike all the really calm ones she has come up with in the past…ha). Hip-hopper Shafiq stormed out angrily when he couldn’t keep up. Burlesque dancer Rachel was also cut, despite begging to dance for her life and then doing so. She was told that she relies to heavily on her sex appeal. Amelia, the 1920s inspired contemporary dancer, also had to dance for her life but saved herself by completely enchanting everyone.

Group: This is the cruelest part of the audition process. They put the dancers in groups and make them stay up all night choreographing something to random music together. Between the clashing personalities and some of them just not being good choreographers, there are always groups who stay up all night and still do terribly. Included in this group was Danielle who was sent to the hospital after being kicked in the head during the jazz audition and didn’t make it back in time to pick up the routine.

Ballroom: First of all, JASON GILKINSON! I love his choreography. Cyrus, the last remaining Dragon House crew member, struggled but tried so hard the judges let him dance for his life. His solo was absolutely insanely amazing and the judges unanimously voted to keep him in the competition. Amber, country hip hopper Asher, contemporary dancer Dee, and ballet dancer with pink hair Aubrey were all cut during this round. Alexa earned back all the judges’ love in this round when Jason singled her out as being one of the best.

Contemporary: Travis Wall taught the contemporary audition. We saw a montage of all the dancers talking about how great each other were, which was a nice change of pace. Sadly, Mariah the blond female krumper was cut in this round, which made me sad.

Final solos: After one final look at everyone’s solos they cut Adrien (he was the good but underwhelming contemporary dancer with the bad choreography) and 3 other guys.

Next week they will select our Top 20 from the remaining dancers who made it through every single audition. Care to make any predictions? She wasn’t featured much this week, but I really want to see Audrey from Atlanta make it into the Top 20. I seriously cannot wait for some of the award-winning choreography that happens on this show to begin!

  • I think Cyrus will make it. I swore I saw him in the preview for the Top 20 when the judges said "You will be in our Top 20." I just love him- he has such a good attitude about everything!
