Am I the only one that felt lied to after watching this episode? The promo totally led me to believe that Jenna and Matty hooked up in the Sanctuary after she and Jake got together, making it imperative that she confess before the video leaked. However, the paranoia surrounding this episode stemmed from the risk of exposing dirty deeds that happened last semester. This makes me wonder, how dumb are these kids? Let’s reflect.
It’s the first week of school after winter break, and someone notices a camera directed at the Sanctuary, so the students automatically assume that they’ve been on tape for an infinite amount of time before this point. After re-watching the episode, I realized that they knew the cameras were up, but didn’t realize someone had turned them to face their communal love nest. However, what would possess any of them to get down (presumably without several important articles of clothing) in this not so private place, especially when there’s the potential to be filmed? It wasn’t that long ago that I was a teenager, but my hormones never raged harder than my sense of public shame.
I do have some more gripes with the writing and performances in this episode. For starters, Tamara’s “Am-asian” joke was totally stolen from the New York Post‘s feature on Jeremy Lin. Then, Valerie’s British accent sounded more Australian, was that on purpose? My biggest complaint was Jenna’s conversation with her mother says she doesn’t want to tell her dad about the letter because it’ll “break his heart”. Jenna then replies, “What about me? You broke my heart…” when she should have said, “You broke my heart.” See the difference? Alas, I’m nit-picking. Let’s move on.
On a positive note, might I say that I thoroughly enjoyed Ming’s guest star role in this episode? I know, she’s been part of the cast since day one, but her character has a tendency to be eclipsed by Jenna and Tamara. I’d also love to see more of Becca, the Godmother of the “Asian Mafia”, who unfortunately also stole the spotlight from Ming this week. Why haven’t Ming’s parents encouraged her to hang out with this crowd before?
There are still some mysteries to be dissected from this episode, such as, who turned the camera? This question probably won’t be revisited in future episodes, because it’s pretty obvious that it was Becca and the Asians. They had beef with Vice Principal Highmore, and taped her getting it on with Principal Cox, which they knew would occur in the Sanctuary because “they know everything about everything.”
After the aforementioned conversation with her mother and the one at the end of the episode, I think we can rule her out of the running for Jenna’s blog-stalker. That still leaves Lissa and the more likely Valerie, or a character that has yet to be introduced. Another theory I came up with this week is that it’s Jenna’s dad. This week, Lacey shares her secret with Kevin, but he doesn’t react (on camera, at least), probably because he already knows from reading Jenna’s blog. What do you think?

I thought this episode was the best episode yet! It was so hilarious. Anyway that part with the camera not pointing at the sanctuary, I can relate with that. At our school we had this camera pointing at the football field, but behind the field was some kind of smoking area. Which was prohibited of course. One day that freaking camera was also turned around, so everybody freaked out. I guess we don't pay attention to some things until it's too late.. Anyway I'm all for Matty, but not before he apologizes to Jenna. The apologies he makes seem empty, I don't know but I don't think he's being sincere right now.. He's just focused on getting her back.
I was reading another review, and the author noted that their stress over the cameras was kind of a stone age problem. Almost everyone these days has camera phones that can not only send photos to other phones, but to the internet as well. I can see why that wouldn't be a relevant issue in your case with smoking, but it would with the sexual acts on Awkward.. Maybe that's why they call it the Sanctuary because using phones is a no-no, like Vegas. #Knowthecode
Yeah I always thought 'the sanctuary' was this place where they could do and talk about anything without anyone catching them. Or so they made it seem like on Awkward.
I don't think jake is getting less cute...I don't even understand that... I'm really team jake cause although matty didnt intentionally do it he still hurt jenna and wasn't completely open about the relationship and that brings to the fact that he doesn't have a problem with telling jake he was there first and break his heart but had a problem with telling him that he was dating jenna ... I don't really care for matty's sincere apology it doesn't change how dense he is towards other ppls emotions
Team Matty all the way! He definitely has some growing up to do first, but when he does he is the one that has the real chemistry with Jenna. The mistakes he's made have been the result of immaturity, insecurity, and general obliviousness, he's a good guy deep down. :)
I think I could be Team Jake if I saw him as a viable option in the first place. In my last review, I discussed how I was totally blindsided by this love triangle at the end of last season. Hence, Team Matty, baby!
The sanctuary isn't just a place for sex. In season 1, it's seen as more of a "safe haven" place - they show people going there to do drugs and Jenna, Tamara, and Ming have gone there to talk about things they didn't want to discuss in the hallways. One of the funniest parts of the episode, in my opinion, was when the vegetarian/vegan girl confessed to going there to eat a burger.
I also think Matty realized earlier that he loved Jenna. When he heard Jake say she was in love with someone else she had sex with, Matty looked hopeful. I think he wanted to make sure Jenna was talking about him before blurting out the 'I love you.'
Right, I forgot about that! That makes the security cameras much more of a threat than camera phones. And I agree about Matty, I think he really does love her!
I'm team Matty, adores him to bits, he's a typical 15-16 year old guy with lots of insecurities and more importantly no clue of what girls his age want. typical. even this episode proved that when he was surprised that Jenna was hurt by his behavior. Lots of growing up ahead of him, but the same can be said for Jenna. She chosen Jake just because he was the first that wanted to show her in public and she clearly wanted real bf more than anything else. I think they will have a nice relationship for a while, but as soon as Matty acknowledges his mistakes and try fixing them (not by showing his torso, which is btw. toohot for 16 years old ;/ lol) they will get back together. This ofc will not happen soon :D
team jake! matty had his chance and he waste it... and jake is cutiest!:)
