Continuum 1×09 ‘Family Time’ recap: Theseus

I’m so incredibly late with this recap, but here it goes.

What a brilliant episode! I cannot emphasize enough how brilliant this episode was (in my opinion). From the distraught confession of Kiera to the further unfolding of Kagame’s master plan. I actually have nothing bad to say about this episode, maybe the uselessness of Carlos got clouded by the awesomeness of this episode. Isn’t Carlos just an incompetent cop whose sole purpose is to frown once in a while…?

When a farm ordered a suspicious amount of fertilizer, Kiera and Carlos went to visit that farm not knowing that it belonged to Alec’s family. Things got awkward for Alec when Kiera began to analyze his breathing patterns after she asked about the involvement of Julian in that whole riot.

Alec’s stepdad wasn’t having it and quickly showed them his storage place which Julian had locked to prevent them from coming in. After a minute, other young gang members began to arrive with guns and shot Carlos in the stomach.

They shoved Kiera and Carlos in some kind of supply room, while holding the rest of them captive in the living room. Kiera and Carlos tried to escape with the help of Alec, who banged a can into one of the other boy’s head, but were caught in the process. Meanwhile, Alec’s mom was able to contact the police, who arrived with a whole SWAT team. The police made the huge mistake of thinking that the stepdad was behind the whole ordeal and thought he was using young boys to do his dirty work.

While getting his ‘rat-gun’, Alec managed to electrocute one of the boys long enough to grab Kiera’s working suit and put it underneath all the towels for Carlos. By the way, Carlos was looking awful and being useless again basically. Emotionally charged Kiera revealed her home situation to Carlos, knowing that he probably wouldn’t remember it anyway if he survived.

After that, badass Kiera re-emerged and turned invisible due to her suit. This thing really can do everything! Anyway, she sneaked outside to prevent them from blowing up the fertilizer. The leader boy was constantly raving about that this event was Theseus and it had to be done that day, so it wasn’t really a shock when Kagame revealed that this day made him the person who he is right now. After Julian handed in his gun to his dad, the police shot the stepdad in cold blood thinking he was behind the plan. That makes you think, right? I’d like to think that Julian is Kagame, but that isn’t possible since Kagame isn’t born yet in 2012. So maybe Julian is Kagame’s mentor who shapes him to what he is today.

Anyway Kiera also shot the young boy before he was able to destroy all those fertilizer tanks, but the worst had already happened by then and Julian was nowhere to be found. Julian was lastly contacted by Kagame and promised him to bring Julian where no one would find him.

A good surprise was Kellog’s back story. It turns out that Kellog wasn’t really a Liber8 gang-member but his sister was. Kiera killed her in a raid and captured him thinking that Kellog was a gang member. They finally hook up at the end of the episode, or so they’d like us to think.

I’m extremely looking forward to the finale, bring it on Continuum!

  • The affair between Kellogg and Kiera makes this a very hard show to like. If the entire point of the show is the heroine's quest to get back to get back to her family it pretty much ruins the point to have her betray that family. It also pretty much disqualifies her as a heroine. Now her quest is to go home so that she can admit her infidelity to her husband, admit her betrayal to her son and get divorced? That doesn't sound very compelling to me. "Mommy fought very hard to come home and see you son. Now I'll get to see whenever the Judge decides I'm allowed to visit in the shared custody agreement." Yeah . . .
