The O.C. Summer Rewind 1.09 ‘The Heights’ recap: I love Anna!

Surprise! I’m back, and I’m really far into season one at the moment (much farther than episode 9) so I’m going to do my best to write this recap without revealing too much. I really need to stop watching so many episodes in one sitting, but it’s really difficult to stop once you start. You know how it is, I’m sure.

I found this particular episode very interesting because we get to see all these kids together in school for the first time. Naturally, Ryan, Marissa and Seth are all dreading the first day, each for their own reasons. Ryan is the new kid who’s already made lots of enemies. Marissa knows everyone is going to be staring at her and whispering about how she almost killed herself in Mexico. And Seth? Well…I have the feeling he always dreads the first day of school. At least this year he knows he’s got Ryan as a close friend.

Luke tries to patch things up with Marissa, but Marissa isn’t having any of his crap. She sticks with Ryan, Seth and Summer for most of the morning, and agrees to meet up with Ryan after school (a sort of date, I guess). She ends up canceling on him, however, when she learns that the social board at school needs her to stay and help plan an upcoming carnival. She had originally intended on dropping out of all her extracurricular activities, but after talking with one of her teachers she decides to suck it up and stick with it. Ryan is disappointed, but agrees to a rain-check.

As for Seth and Summer? Seth has been spending an awful lot of time with Anna, the new girl that he met at Cotillion. I just want to take a moment to express my opinion here. Anna is awesome—I freaking love her! First of all, she is one of the few girls I’ve seen who can successfully pull off a pixie-short haircut. No offense to anyone out there, but nine times out of ten, I think most girls look better with longer hair. (I even Googled Samarie Armstrong, and I think she looks much cuter with her short hair. That almost never happens.) Aside from being cute, Anna is actually nice to Seth. She talks to him like he’s a human being, she’s always smiling and happy to see him, and you know what? She wants to spend time with him. It couldn’t be more obvious that she’s crushing on him, and Summer knows it. In fact, I think she might even be a little jealous. Why else would she be cutting on Anna all the time in front of Seth? All I’ve got to say is…you had your chance, bitch. Kidding. I like Summer, too, but right now I’m definitely favoring Anna. But that’s just me.

Meanwhile, Luke eventually catches up to Marissa and tells her that he’s sorry. Ryan overhears their conversation and thinks that they’re getting back together. (All I’ve got to say here is, how stupid does he think Marissa is?) In attempt to get his mind off of things he decides to try out for the soccer team. Luke coincidentally happens to be on the team as well, and during practice Ryan purposely hurts him out of anger. Eh…not exactly the best move there, Ryan, I will say that much. Thankfully, though, the coach only suspends him because he believes he has talent.

On the night of the school carnival Ryan insists on riding the Ferris wheel with Marissa, despite his fear of heights. Anna slyly slips the operator some money and tells him to stop the Ferris wheel while they’re at the top so that they can talk things over. Her plan works, and Marissa and Ryan kiss and make up (literally). Seth also gets a kiss from Anna…while Summer is watching. Ha! The look on her face is priceless. I’m just waiting for a cat fight to break out between these two.

OH, and I can’t forget the whole Sandy and Kirsten situation. Kirsten’s company (or, well, her dad’s company) recently bought a piece of land that Sandy wants to preserve. Apparently he’s some kind of tree-hugger. (Not that there’s anything wrong with that.) And so, long story short, Sandy decides to take the case. In other words, he’s suing his father-in-law. And his wife (sort of). Sadness…Sandy and Kirsten, in my opinion, are the most adorable couple on this show so far, and I hate seeing them fight. I would imagine that Caleb is going to have a hell of a lot to say about this as well. Well, actually, I know that he does, but more on that later. Caleb, you jackass.

Anyway, that’s it for now. Gotta catch up on these recaps so I can keep watching the show. I’ve got three days of work off in a row next week, so expect to see a couple of these sooner than later.

  • The Heights case is just a big contrivance to create drama. It would never happen in real life. I like Anna much more than Summer. I've watched up to 1x20. I'm getting bored. A bunch of episodes could have been cut down to a few. 27 episodes in the season? WTF?

  • Yes, yes, yesss! Anna was the best thing that happened to this show in terms of supporting cast! Anna was just that type of girl you instantly like (unless you are Summer...but the night is still young)! I loved the scene where all of them were standing in front of the school basically spelling out why they know the first is gonna suck for them...and Seth just gets on his skate board and just goes...yeah, classic OC moment. The carnival was super cute! Ryan and Marissa will have quite a number of epic kisses scenes and this was one of them!

  • I like Anna so much in theory (I'm definitely more Anna than Summer in terms of my own personality) but man did she annoy me. I know it's weird.

WHOA, soccer Ryan...what happened to that?

This show gives me so many happy feels and nothing makes me sadder than when Kirsten and Sandy are at odds!
