Glee 4×03 ‘Makeover’ review: Don’t you dare look down

If you haven‘t seen this episode yet, don’t take your eyes off the screen during the ‘Celebrity Skin’ music number. I missed approximately two seconds of sweet Sam Evans shirtlessness because I was typing while they sang. Those are two seconds I will never get back. At least not in HD…until next week, when the free version of Hulu relinquishes the episode to us. In addition, if they wanted us to pay attention at all to Blaine’s side of the debate, they should have had him go first, and not shown Sam getting dressed backstage while he spoke. Not that I’m complaining or anything.

Speaking of abs that just won’t quit, I totally could have done without Brody and Rachel in this episode if it weren’t for Finn showing up in the end. If you think I’m obsessed with Sam, you should have seen how much I worshipped Finn before Ol’ Trouty Mouth rolled into town. Again, I’m super angry that they make him out to be so stupid this season. There’s no way you’re going to convince me that a guy who has managed to master a completely alien language (Navi) and is still on track to graduate after switching schools three times during his high school career is this dumb.

As if we weren’t already thinking about sex, Emma also conveniently has a pot of orchids on her desk, which made me laugh, though I’m concerned for Will and Emma. Not only did Ryan Murphy say that every couple could fall apart this season, it looks as though he’s going to make it all happen next week. As if that ever happens in real life! I’d like to know what happened to Burt’s campaign platform for the arts, but I’m assuming they’ll feature that in conjunction with Will’s decision to leave. If not, then this show is even more doomed than I thought. I’d like to know who will run the glee club in his absence. Perhaps Finn, now that he seems to have left the army?

It should go without saying that Sam and Brittany’s duet was my favorite number. Though I actually liked all of the song choices for the first time in three years, I really wanted a car to come along and run over Brody and Rachel while they ran in the street during ‘A Change Would Do You Good.’ However, I don’t have any complaints about Sarah Jessica Parker. Though her character comes off as a bit too sugary-sweet, it’s not the reason I really like her. She just seemed so genuine, but maybe that’s just in comparison to the Kate Hudson train wreck, which is hopefully ancient history now. After watching the promos, I fully expected this to be my favorite episode of the season so far, and as always, I was right.

  • I think you have to give lots of credit to Cory Monteith for going through a miriad of emotions (joy, surprise, and betrayal) all in 15 seconds and without uttering a word. His face talks...his mouth doesn't have to. Good job!

    • I agree, it reminded me of an episode on TVD when Elena tells Stefan she kissed Damon, Paul Wesley's face and no comment was just great.

  • I'm glad you don't like dumb!Sam either, I don't get why they needed to do that to the character. He is way too good for that, but at least he's still the same nice person.
Also I was kind of happy not seeing Rachel for a while, just because the New York storylines bore me, I was kind of hoping for the spin-off but now it's half glee and half that. And Sarah Jessica Parker's character is a nice contrast with Rachel's horrible teacher, I'm actually wondering if that could change.
I'm not sure if me and my lack of caring affects my judgement of the show, but it's getting better somehow, at least the recycled storylines look a bit different from last year. Or maybe they are putting just a tiny bit of more real human feelings.

  • If I were Anna Wintour and had to send the writers of Glee an e-mail, I think I would have just said - C+. Because that is how I grade this episode - better than the Britany 2.0 fiasco but not great.

I am still so angry about the last 10 mins of this episode that I am just going to give my thoughts in bullet points because that is how I felt about Glee last night - like it shot me in the heart several times:

    1. I'll start with the ridiculous election theme - I liked the ridiculous part of it in terms of the debate scene - because in my opinion ALL ELECTION CAMPAIGNS ARE JUST LIKE GLEE SHOWED US - a) you either politicians that are like Brittany - who have no clue why they are doing this or if they should be doing this but they go ahead anyway & b) you have politicians like Blaine and Artie - who say the most cliche things about the most cliche topics. Sue's reaction of falling down on her arms and waiting for this to be over - pretty much summarizes how I feel during election - too much ado about nothing. But given that this is a show where people sing 90% of the time, I did not like the songs for that - in fact the scene where they do the whole spinning around and Sam looks like he is about barf - I could relate to that.

    2. Yes, I don't like dumb! Sam either.

    3. SJP trumps Kate Hudson because in terms of Glee's guest start choice ....she adds to Glee what marshmallows to hot chocolate - its just so good together. Its not that I hate Kate Hudson, its just that I hate Sue 2.0.

    3. About the couples:
    - Wilma - now I am a bit confused here, because in this episode Emma is all sweet and supportive, and the promo for next week has a part where she says to Will something about him expecting her to just get up and move with him....ahhhh, what is that all about?

    - Kurt and Blaine & Finchel- I want to discuss them both at the same time because I see them mirrowing each other right now - Am I the only one who hates what the writers are doing to Rachel and Kurt's characters? Just 2 EPISODES AGO both Rachel and Kurt were nostalgic about their loved ones, and life in Lima. I am sure you remember it was just 2 episodes ago that it was Blaine who actually pushed Kurt to just GTFO out of Lima already because he was miserable there and needed to pursue his dreams. Just like Finn did with Rachel at the end of last season. So 2 EPISODES LATER Kurt is working at Vogue.com (HIPPO BROOCHES get you far in life) and it takes him that long to start ignoring Blaine over the phone and Skype? And after 2 EPISODES Rachel's makeover is what it takes for her to invite the shower dude for DINNER? And KISSING him 5 mins later? To the soundtrack of MOON RIVER? Glee, that was BRUTAL! But Glee didn't stop there, the knock-out punch for me was the soap opera ending of Finn showing up at the end.

Guys, I feel like next week's episode (which for some reason Murthy is calling Glee's best episode ever (I think he did not watch the Madonna episode)), is going to be painful....like really painful, because if Blaine and Kurt will be breaking up for at least something barely understandable (long-distance relationships are a killer), with Finchel it is, to quite JSP's character Isabelle - SICK. Think about, Rachel is attracted to a a hot guy who says he "likes her"....and because he thinks she is smocking hot...Poor guy, he still needs to meet the real Rachel, not the ice-cream eating and Instagram fan Rachel.

    • I think Ryan Murphy is calling it the best episode ever for its emotionality, not for fan reaction. People are going to hate it for the same reason they hated the Grey's Anatomy finale and premiere. He's going to kill something people love: relationships.

The election was exactly what I expected it to be since they're in high school and Brittany is Brittany. I thought it was unbelievable that nobody else was running except for other ND members, and that they would have vice presidents. It's classic Murphy to stretch the truth inside his own warped mind to make story lines fit.

And Moon River...was that supposed to be an Andy Williams thing? What a cheap attempt at a tribute that most viewers won't even understand.

      • Well, for me the best episode in terms of emotionality will be the episode where Kurt's dad had a heart attack...it felt so real. Also Kurt's "I wanna hold your hand"made me cry. People hated Grey's Anatomy';s finale and premiere? Wow, I didn't....I actually cried my eyes out during the finale.

        • Yes, everyone's making a huge stink over the deaths and sending threats to Shonda Rhimes on Twitter! I loved both episodes too, and thought she made the right decision for the show.

As for Glee, I think the most emotional episode for me was 'On My Way,' when Karovsky attempts suicide. However, the show has a really bad habit of resolving these kinds of issues really quickly. They did it with Burt's heart attack, Karovsky's issues (where did he go?) and Quinn's accident.

          • Ok, yeah, I see what you mean, read few other recaps and saw the comments. I am so glad you enjoyed both episodes, I actually applaud Shonda for keeping me interested in Grey's for 9 years already, because to my memory there so few tv shows that could ever maintain that level of writing and just good quality overall. From what I can see hate is coming from Slexie fans, I blame it on the general trend of watching the show because you ship a couple....but you know, there is beauty in death sometimes, so yes, Lexie's death and Marc's while being tragic, at least got some recognition at the end. They both died knowing that they loved each other. Also, its life...and Shonda does a great job at keeping Grey's as realistic as possible.

But about Glee - yep, thats classic Glee since s2 for you, their PSA episodes while carrying an important message always seem like they are forgotten about the next episode.

  • I really enjoyed this episode. Yeah, the election was ridiculous and it was strange that so few people showed up this year when last year there were three Glee kids running but it was still a huge event and seemed to take over like 5 episodes. And the music video solving all of Kurt, Rachel, and SJP's problems was silly as well. But, it I did like SJP's character, and a lot of the music, and I will always be fond of any episode with a healthy amount of Brittany S. Pearce.

I was really happy that they carried over Sam and Brittany's friendship (and I hope it stays a friendship) to another episode because I feel like Glee deserves to be applauded whenever they show even a little bit of continuity. And I thought Rachel and Brody were cute. You must have worshiped Finn as much as I loathed him, and I just like that Brody is a sweet guy who shares similar interests and so far seems genuine and upfront about liking Rachel.
