True Blood 5.12 ‘Save Yourself’ Season Finale Recap and Review

THAT FINALE, YOU GUYS. OMG.

Sorry, no complete photo recap this week, you guys. I started school on Monday and I have been way too busy.

So here’s the most important things that happened:

1)      Russell died within the first minute of the episode, fairly easily killed by the combined efforts of the fairies.

2)      Bill tells Salome that she is the chosen one, according to Lilith

3)      This chick is crazy on V and tells Alcide about how JD is forcing everybody to drink vampire blood and is raping the young girls in the pack.

4)      Andy becomes a single father.

5)      Sam and Luna rescue Emma, for once actually having a smart plan and nearly ruining it by being as obvious as possible.

6)      Alcide takes some V, kills JD, and becomes packmaster.

7)      THIS HAPPENED:

8)      Jason is hallucinating his parents, who urge him to be extra racist towards vampires. Jessica tells Jason she loves him and he is a dick.

9)      All of the members of the Authority except Bill are dead.

10)   BILL DRINKS ALL THE BLOOD, APPEARS TO DIE FOR A MOMENT, AND THEN EMERGES AS SOME KIND OF LILITH-BILL HYBRID?

I LOVED this episode. I feel like I had forgotten that True Blood could be this good. This finale had the perfect balance of humor and tension and shock value. The infiltration of the Authority base was nerve-wracking. The build up to the final meeting with Bill was perfectly done. Speaking of Bill, can we take a minute to applaud how AMAZING Bill was this episode? He was so evil and sneaky and badass. It was the first time I truly saw him as   a convincing villain.

Overall Season Thoughts:

Honestly, the greatness of this finale only highlighted the huge flaws the rest of this season contained.  I feel that much of the season was very slowly paced. I had thought that we would see the actual war happen in this season but it appears we will have to wait until next summer to see the humans and the vampires finally have at it. There was too much time wasted on storylines that didn’t even pan out well, such as Lafayette’s demon possession or the Ifrit. Tara and Pam being confined to Fangtasia for most of the season made them pretty useless and irrelevant. I would have rathered that the season had focused more on speeding up the main Lilith/vampire war storyline than trying to give the multitudes of characters all equal screentime (in that respect, getting rid of Hoyt was a good idea).  In addition, I feel that after the debacle of the last season, which was entirely too much of the love triangle, the writers retreated hastily in the opposite direction this time. But having none to few romantic storylines at all made the season a little dull.

However, I think the biggest mistake the writers made was not killing Tara off at the beginning of the season. Why?

a) This show has too many characters.

b) Tara’s transformation caused a rift in her relationships with Sookie and Lafayette that didn’t get addressed all season.

c) Most of all, the writer’s inability to kill off Tara only reinforced the idea that the viewers don’t need to worry about the fate of the main characters, which makes the dangerous situations the characters are often in a lot less exciting.

4) The sudden Pam-Tara storyline feels like a desperate attempt to keep her relevant.

Overall, I think this season was much better than the last but still not living up to the standards of the first three at all. I give it a B- overall.

Predicted storylines for season six:

1)      The V that Alcide took will make him crazy, too!

2)      Luna dies (this might be wishful thinking) or she has some weird shifter disease.

3)      Eric and Sookie will get back together

4)      Jason and Jessica will get together

5)      Andy’s fairy babies will have powers.

Anyways, the above are all just my opinions and guesses. Leave your thoughts on the finale and the season below, as well as your predictions for season 6! And thank you for reading my recaps all summer! I appreciate every comment and every view.

  • That was the awesomest finale from start to finish! And that ending.. I HATE YOU, TRUE BLOOD
FOR ALWAYS ENDING LIKE THAT! How the hell am I supposed to wait until
    next year?? ;( :D

  • While I agree with you for the most part, I disagree with killing Tara off but they should have made more a story out of her rift with Sookie and Lafayette and had her discuss her feelings on being turn as she is the first baby vampire, whose human life we saw (as while Jessica was baby vamp story, she came in as one, not as her human self and other than being extremely sheltered and possibly abused, not sure on the later, we never saw Jessica's human life).

Another hope for season 6, I hope this Jessica and Jason romance is over, as it made little sense to me because Jason has never had great opinions about vampires nor showed an attraction to Jessica prior to getting her blood in his system. Also they had sex quite often which was weird considering Jessica was a virgin unless that got dropped or became non-issue offscreen.

    • Agreed, they should have definitely spent more time focusing on Tara's coming to terms with what it means to be a vampire instead of just building sexual tension with Pam. But I kind of like Jessica and Jason together, though not as much as Hoyt. And I think she could have sex just fine, it just meant her body restored to virgin state after each time

      • I just recall she her having pain though after her first time and we never saw her and Hoyt do it again after she realize virginity was restored, so maybe I just wanted that to be address as to how she dealt with that. I don't know Jess and Jason seem just sexual and like I said because of Jason's opinion of vampires it was hard for me to buy their relationship (other than it being about the sex), Sookie was already attracted to Bill and Eric before feeding from them and you saw how quick he was on the anti-vampire train without much persuasion, he has always been anti-vampire, I would have rather seen him and Tara try to connect, as at least there was some background there before just throwing them together (Jess and Jason imo were just thrown together). I think her and Jason are better off as friends.

As for Tara, I believe killing her would have been cop out as imo there was more story to tell there and Lafayette still needed someone once Jesus got killed but again, the writers did nothing with it. They may do something next season as each season is only suppose to be a week.

        • It's not so much that her virginity was "restored." However she wants to define virginity she has had sex several times already, so most people wouldn't consider her a virgin anymore. I'm convinced that Alan Ball is no more enlightened regarding female anatomy and what actually happens when most cisgender women have sex than most male politicians. So yeah, I don't like how this show did that whole thing. Yes, Jessica's hymen could have been restored to a point which would make sex more painful, but it's not like your hymen actually breaks when you have sex. It just moves/adjusts. You always have a hymen unless you're not born with one. So yeah, this whole thing is stupid.

But regarding the characters of color, Alan could have portrayed them in a much more holistic manner. He could have made them as cherishable as a character like Sookie but he didn't. And I'm thinking even if they were better written, made more relevant to the overall story and had their own individual purposes, outside of serving white people drinks, saving their white friends, being "sassy" all the damn time, people still wouldn't like them. So at this point I don't give a shit.

  • Oh well... guess it's VD time again. I'm going to miss the laughs, the alphas and the multiple story lines.

And god damn - Bill has become the best villain I've seen in a long time.

  • It was a brill ep. and it dose seem like the old true blood, I'm wondering if the show is going to change much now that Alan Ball is dropping down and im really sad to hear next season will only have 10 ep.s I know it's because of Anna's babies but I'm still not happy about it. And your totally right about Lafayette's story line as well as Tara's but I did love how Eric called her family to Nora :) I don't know what the're going to do about 'Billith' it seems like a bad dream turned worse, we weren't given much information about Lilith's blood other that it makes vamps high in small doses and i have a small feeling that 'God' isn't really legit, Queen Sophie-Anne had said that gods never show up back in season 3 but they may have over looked that when writing this season.
