How I Met Your Mother review: ‘Band or DJ?’

Hey guys sorry for the lack of reviews over the past couple of weeks, but I’m back and ready to review the rest of the season!

This week’s episode of HIMYM was the first one back from the mid – season finale where Ted – being the best bro ever – let go of the idea of him and Robin, so that Barney could complete the final play and finally propose to Robin, which I have to say is my favorite scene of the show thus far. So this episode starts off with Lily and Ted arguing about how to plan the wedding, the big question being, band or DJ? But this isn’t just some stupid fight over control over Robin and Barney wedding, but has a deeper meaning for Ted, which he isn’t able to address until he has a heart to heart with Lily.  During there heart to heart Lily tries to get Ted to acknowledge the real problem he has with Robin and Barney. This discussion lead to Lily opening up about how she sometimes doesn’t want to be a mother, and be able to do some more art work. Allowing Ted to come to terms with the fact that he thinks Robin should be with him not Barney. I have to say that this was probably one of the, if not the best scenes of the episode because it was so honest moment between these two and it was nice to see Lily get emotionally because we’ve rarely see this side of her character. It was also so sad to watch these two characters come to terms with the real issues in their life.

While all this is going on, the newly engaged couple have a problem of there own, which is for Barney to get Robin’s father permission to marry her; proving to be a very difficult task for both of them. If any of you remember Robin’s dad you know that Robin and him don’t have the best relationship and this episode is no expectation. First off her father blatantly does not give Barney permission to marry Robin due to the fact that he’s blond and Robin also finds out that her father is seeing someone, is having “fun” and requests her to be his friend on Facebook. Robin is a bit taken aback by this change in her father, although it doesn’t help their relationship at all. Meanwhile Barney, in an attempt to get Robin’s father’s approval dyes his hair black – which he should never do again – and is forced to almost shot a bunny. Although this was pretty extreme, it was hilarious to watch Barney and the bunny, which he named Fluffer Nutters. So as all this is happening, Robin accepts her father’s friend request, she finds out that he is married and didn’t even tell her about it, prompting her exclude her father from the wedding. After this intense father – daughter moment, Barney bring Robin’s father to her and gets him to apologize (although he once again goes a little too far with) and somewhat be the father she wants him to be.

In the end Ted and Robin’s stories come together as she tells him what she wanted him to say, but didn’t. However she realizes that Barney really does love her because he got her father to apologize to her for the first time, which in turn allowed Ted to come to some realization that maybe Barney is the right person for her. However, I’m sure that Ted’s “love” for Robin will continue to be a consist story for the rest of the season.

As the final moments of the episode play out, we are taken 4 months down the road where Ted runs into Cindy (the mother’s ex – roommate) again and we learn that the band that was booked for Barney and Robin’s wedding fell through. Cindy’s wife then has the brilliant idea that Barney and Robin should get her ex-roommate’s band to play.  Leading to another flash – forward to Robin and Barney’s wedding day, where they do actually get married and we get another glimpse of the mother. Which I think means that Ted will meet her by the end of the season, one can only hope.

Anyways, overall I think this episode was a really good start to the second half of the season and really showed how HIMYM has the perfect balance between comedy and drama.

What did you think of this episode? Are you excited for Barney and Robin’s wedding? What do you think will happen with Ted and Robin?

  • I am over this Ted is in love with Robin and can't let her go BS!
We all know he aint gon end up with her so i dont know why this dumb storyline keeps taking up time
How many times do we have to see Ted decide to let her go and then cry over her the next epsiode?
    End of rant
Other than that, it was a good episode

    • I completely agree with you, the show has really exhausted the whole Robin - Ted relationship and I just hope they wrap up this story quickly. But since they have hinted at a Ted and Robin reunion in multiple episodes I'm expecting them to drag on their relationship for a while.
