(Re)watch 2013: And the series we’re watching is… Lost Girl

What an intense journey this was, huh? After having a huge lead in every poll, Lost Girl kind of battled with Supernatural at the end there. People were calling others out. It kind got of ugly. (And I seriously don’t even know how or why!) But regardless, Lost Girl won out, and I kind of am excited about it. For one, I do still sort of need to watch all the series that were in the poll (I definitely want to watch Friday Night Lights some day to see what the noise is about, and people have told me I’d really enjoy Misfits, and others have pleaded that I watch Supernatural) but it’s kind of really refreshing to know that I’m going to be watching a series I know nothing about.

Well, actually, since the poll began, I’ve been getting details in the comments section, so I know a few things now but I honestly didn’t know about the show until a few weeks ago. Sorry, guys, Canadian shows that air on SyFy aren’t on my radar often. I apologize. I think it goes without saying, however, that I’m definitely anxious to watch it!

Now, last year, with Buffy we did live rewatches each week, but that’s because I was very fortunate and humbled to have a Buffy fan page reached out to me and we were able to coordinate that. We could try again this year but I don’t know how successful we’d be. Regardless, I still would like your input on how to schedule the rewatch. Looking at the episode count, there are 48 episodes. So, you know, a lazy Sunday afternoon’s worth for people like us. That said, not all of us can be amazing couch potatoes. So perhaps we could try four episodes a week (starting in a couple of weeks)? We can watch four a week whenever, as long as it’s before each Monday or something. I don’t know, let’s discuss in the comments!

(I really hope I don’t get too addicted because then I’ll watch an entire season in a day.)

If you’re watching along with us, remember that the first two seasons are up on Netflix and that the entire series thus far is on iTunes and Xbox.

Anyway… I’m excited! I hope you are, too, and that if you voted along you’ll stick around for the rewatch and care about some random person’s opinions while watching the show. Thank you to everyone! Can’t wait for it to be a couple of weeks from now.

  • Yeah, Lost Girl generally has been only averagely known in USA for a while while its basically the most popular show in Canada, alongside Continuum both in terms of ratings and the size of the fanbase(which is only proven by certain spoilery pairing videos having over 16 million views on youtube)

The "breakthrough" in wide-spread US popularity started around the end of last year to start of this year when we beat Glee fandom in AfterEllen and E Online polls. A lot more major websites started to cover it, etc.

The fandom itself has been quite active and dedicated since the start, with people being active and supporting the show, however it began to grow quite a lot at the latest season(since the show jumped in quality A LOT) and the fandom unified and became a force to be reckoned with.

In terms of show - its quite witty and there are quite a few homages to popculture and various shows and events and that's all I am going to say about it.

As for the whole "war' that has been going on - I as well as few other members of fandom made posts on Tumblr about the show, some people in SN fandom found them, re-blogged them with certain offensive remarks urging to vote against this show and cue the war drums and all the ugly stuff. As I said. SN fandom can be very... "competitive".

Anyway, hope you enjoy the show. It certainly has some flaws and its not 100% perfect, but its enjoyable, witty and entertaining and a lot of people can't wit to see your opinion on various things in it

    • I know that small parts of all fandoms can get a bit… excited from time to time, so I can't fault an entire fandom for that. And thanks! Looking forward to the show and kind of glad there isn't any pressure like last year, with Buffy being like *ONE OF THE BEST TV SHOWS EVER* and all. Haha!

  • Well, I'm really happy that Lost Girl won, and I'm really excited that you're going to be doing a (re)watch of the show. LG has its flaws, but it also has a lot of heart and charm to it as well, and has a refreshing take on female sex and sexuality. I hope you'll enjoy it, and I'll try to keep up with the rewatch as much as I can over the coming weeks. Thanks for the poll and for including Lost Girl in the list.

    • No need to thank me for adding Lost Girl! I asked others what show I should watch and commenters nominated Lost Girl a few times :) Which show doesn't have its flaws, you know? I'm actually looking forward to seeing the show now that so many people have said it's refreshing on its take of sexuality; series here in the U.S. are, kind of, behind on the times in that regard.

      • Yeah it's not perfect when it comes to the Bo and Lauren relationship, since sometimes it seems lesser compared to Bo and Dyson or just seems to be a sexy supplement to their romantic interaction (like I think there's at least one scene where Bo is having sex with a woman but it seems mostly to entice Dyson). But I understand that people still like it, even members of the LGBT community. But people should be mindful that it isn't perfect and perhaps it's the best so far in terms of fantasy shows with LGBT characters. But it could definitely be better. There's also this three episode series called In The Flesh which also features two gay characters, though it's debatable how they handled their inclusion. But it's a very interesting take on zombies and their integration into human society.

        • I am sorry but that's bull - if there's ONE thing Lost Girl does very much right is to give equal coverage to the elements of its love triangle(square? pentagon?)

However the show tries to avoid the whole "who will the lead choose?!" crap and all the downsides of love triangles by focusing on one "point" at the time. So when Dyson takes the stage, he takes the stage. And when Lauren takes the stage, she takes the stage. And so on.

I do not think show treats any sides without respect as there is enough subtext to add significance to either of the ships.

Now I do not like Dyson(he works best as a character solo or with certain other characters) or DyBo pairing itself that much(mainly because for most of time Dyson comes off as creepy and patronizing, but I guess that's one of his flaws), but I got to admit the other "choices"(in my opinion, better) are in no way less important in Bo's life.

          • Just as an example of ways the show seems to illegitamize BoxLauren compared to DysonxBo. They continuously remind us of the fact that in 100 years Lauren will be dead and it implies that their relationship is less significant. It suggests that Lauren can't be Bo's true love b/c she's human, and so that just leaves Dyson.

And then there seemed to be more of a conflict of interest for Lauren, b/c of her association with the Ash. But like you mentioned I guess she got more of a turn, or coverage, in the second season.

Also regarding the sex to entice a man, that was actually Ryan, not Dyson. There was scene in a previous episode where Ryan gets Bo a woman as a "gift" and they essentially perform in front of him. The episode was Table for Fae from season two. That's more of a general problematic element, not really specific to the main two pairings.

As for general flaws in LGBT portrayals in the episode Food for Thought, Bo uses her Succubus powers to sexually excite a gay man. Even though he acknowledges that what is happening shouldn't be happening the show still thought it appropriate to have this guy subjected to that. It's something I've seen in other shows like TVD and a UK show about witches. I just don't enjoy rape scenes in general, esp when they involve sexual minorities. For instance watching Gunhill Road, I had a really bad reaction to what happened between the main character and the sex worker her father requested to have sex with her to make her more of a "man."

And also recently I there was some material that I found offensive towards transwomen.

Perhaps it's not much in the end, at least in this summation, but I'm not alone in concerns that BoxLauren is not treated the same way as BoxDyson. And of course the LGBT inclusion is not perfect.
something I've seen more than once like in TVD (with Elena's mom) and another UK show about witches

          • 1) Lauren Being dead in 100 years is a fact. And that is something that can be viewed as either subject FOR or AGAINST that ship. Its very two-fold.
            2) No it does not suggest that. The lifespan has nothing to do with love - if you view it as an argument FOR the ship, it makes the ship tragic in the "let's fight destiny" kind of way, which is beautiful.
            3) Lauren's conflict of interest because of The Ash is directly paralleled by Dyson's own conflict of interest. They both are slaves to their pasts - both metaphorically and literally.

            4) The whole Ryan threesome thing is looking into it way too deep. You have three people. They have consensual sex with a foreplay element. That's it. All three were portrayed as equals.

            5) Its not about "portaying one orientation aproperly. Its about equality.

  • If you liked Buffy, Lost Girl is like the younger Canadian kid sibling. Except without Whedon and with less of a budget. Sometimes it will be annoying, sometimes it will be even more fun than Buffy. It's a bit of a contradiction. They have episodes that really hit all the right marks and are ambitious as hell, and then they have episodes that remind you that it's just a small-time show. All part of the charm.

The fandom can be crazy at times (especially recently) so be prepared for some of that? Just... fair warning.

I was planning my own rewatch so I'll play along. Hope you enjoy!

    • That's cool. Some of my favorite Buffy episodes are the quieter ones, anyway… like Tabula Rusa which I don't think gets enough attention. Haha! And hope to see you around as you rewatch :D

  • Syfy has been turning out some great shows with consistent writing and acting, my other favorite is the US version of Being Human, season 3 just ended, but it got picked up for a 4th season that I'm eagerly awaiting. I also feel like you would enjoy misfits as well, I put off watching it till a couple months ago. I'm not kidding I got my mom, my younger brother to watch it with me, they were so obsessed with it too lol. It achieved this great balance of being really dark with great comedic moments and I don't think any show will do what they did for a really long time, plus the music was great. The great thing too is that since it is a british show the seasons are short, so when you have the time, watch it!

    • Remember when Syfy was Sci-Fi… ahhh. Well, to be honest, I don't really watch Syfy all that much because sci-fi isn't a genre I immediately gravitate towards. (I'm actually not even sure if Lost Girl is sci-fi, it looks more supernatural-ish to me or maybe a mixture of both? better yet, don't even tell me!) But haha! Good to know about Misfits. Maybe I can just watch it this summer as a treat for me XD

      • If you do check out Being Human do watch the UK season 1 - 3 I think. Before most of the original cast starts disappearing. Just my personal bias but Mitchell is way more handsome in my opinion than the guy they got for the US version. He's a hot Scottish man. And I love their werewolf, who is also Jewish.

        • Mitchell is just hot and the irish accent helps too, I was really skeptical of the US version because I loved the UK version, but I really enjoy the US version.

        • for shame, everyone knows Aidan and Mitchell is Irish.

The cast start disappearing cause the guy who plays Mitchell got offer a role in The Hobbit (went to the midnight premiere and kept awhing everytime he appeared on screen) because Peter Jackson loved Being Human and the werewolf guy got another a show.

  • Thanks for the info on where to find the series. I like the idea of 4 or so episodes per week by a certain day. I don't know anything about this show, but am excited to get involved in a rewatch from the beginning (I jumped into buffy partway through).

    • You're welcome! It's too bad that the season just ended or not it would probably be on Netflix, as well. And cool! Glad you stuck around after finding out about the Buffy Rewatch!

      • no but then again I didn't watch the entire series as it aired in the US, I watch the first season and season 2 online as it aired in Canada (yeah I don't like waiting, I watch my UK shows with the UKers). People noted the episodes were not in order for season 2.

      • There was a problem earlier last year that Netlix had S2 listed BACKWARDS(netflix is known for messing up like that).

It has since then been fixed and the current episode order is correct.

        • you mean late last year as New Girl only went up on netflix after season 2 aired in the US.

Okay..I don't watch Lost Girl on netflix as it still too close together and new to me to watch, also netlfix gets lazy with uploading seasons and right now I am pissed that Dirty Sexy Money is no longer being streamed.

  • I voted for Lost Girl, but Supernatural fought so hard, maybe they deserve some recognition, too? Like, I don't know, 2 episodes of each per week? I don't know, maybe I'm just being too nice! That's what it does, being Canadian!

Which I guess is one of the reason I'm so happy Lost Girl get the (re)watch done! Canadian shows, rarely recognized, but this one built itself quite a reputation lately! :) The fanbase, mostly, they do an amazing job promoting it, and one of the particular relationship (the Bo/Lauren one, in case you didn't guessed already! LOL :p ).

As for the show, like someone said, it's like a mini-Buffy! Not as awesome in terms of script, but it gets the same tone of a strong main woman character kicking up some monter's butt, saving people, and stuff! I'd also say it's more edgy than Buffy were: So Buffy had one of her main character lesbian? Well, Lost Girl has the actual main character bisexual, and they show us the sex scenes! (no worry, it's all side-boobs and butt cheeks; this isn't Game of Thrones after all! LOL). And the cast, especcially the 3 women characters, are absolutely amazing! Bo, Kenzi and Lauren are all very different characters, different personnality, different approches to the problems they'll face, yet I bet you'll love all 3 of them! :)

So, yeah, I'll leave it at that! 'hope you enjo it, I'll be reading your reviews! Have fun!
