The Vampire Diaries ‘The Originals’ review: Baby mama drama

3.8 / 4 ( 4 votes )

So that happened. The CW tonight aired the back pilot episode to The Originals which, let’s just be honest, is getting picked up for the fall. It follows Klaus in New Orleans, where witches are planning “a move on him” and… well, things are exactly as they seem. Back in Mystic Falls (for a total of three minutes), the Salvatore brothers are trying to torture the humanity back in Elena and Rebekah and Katherine talk to each other at some point.

I don’t truly know what to think of this episode. On one hand, I didn’t really miss anyone from our original show The Vampire Diaries back in Mystic Falls during the hour. On the other, I didn’t really care for what was happening in New Orleans, either. Marcell and the new witch characters were fine, I guess. But as far as I’m concerned, we’ve already seen Klaus in his umpteenth power trip that I could not care less to watch him try to conquer a new town — especially when the conquering seems quite easy. I still have no idea why the witches won’t let him just murder everyone in sight, but okay.

The biggest problem, however, is that the show had to establish Klaus as someone who was likable to become his own protagonist. It very well can’t make him an antihero (how much farther can he go?). To do that, it — get this — made Hayley pregnant with his child. My sister thought it was a great, unpredictable twist. I agree with her, it definitely was unpredictable. However, I have to disagree that it was great; I kind of, and don’t judge me, laughed at the screen. I don’t know if it’s because of preconceived story lines including Bella Swan and Edward Cullen or… anything else, but I found it quite farfetched. It was a reach both as a plot point and an element in the story to raise Klaus’s clout as a protagonist. Then the series contradicts itself and has Klaus declare he’s going to takeover this “empire.” The Originals is blatantly asking you to root for what this character has tried to do over and over again as our villain.

In short, I’ve done enough watching of Klaus takeovers and usurpings and looking at art and seeing how that defines him and then biting vampires but then having a change of heart and “saving them.”

But Klaus fans are going to love this. And that’s what The CW is betting on. (And hey, it looks like Caroline may follow suit.)

In Mystic Falls: it appears as though Rebekah will be staying put on The Vampire Diaries… and I’m okay with that. I liked Katherine’s insight into why people like her and Klaus are who they are and how well that translates to, well, everyone on the freaking show. But there’s not much to analyze here. The Salvatores are still just playing “games” (her word, not mine) with Elena to break her. Basically, this was a noncommittal week for the story that’s closer to home.

Overall, an okay episode, but it didn’t irritate me like other “okay” episodes. Certainly watchable.

Though there’s one thing that’s really important we didn’t discuss…

CAN WE TALK ABOUT ELIJAH’S BOY BAND EXIT, THO?

  • I don't know, I thought the entire thing was absurd. I've never been one for magical mystical babies and I'm not sure why you'd saddle a show that hasn't even begun yet with that kind of stupidity.

Marcel was compelling though - we've never met a vampire like him. But I'm disgusted by the constant race issues the writers for this show have, and this show will be even more offensive than The Vampire Diaries if it gets picked up. And I honestly didn't think that was possible.

  • I try to like TVD but I just haven't been able to care enough to watch for the past month or two. Just hanging out for TB now.

  • Thankfully they have already said Caroline won't be moving over to The Originals so we are spared that nightmare.

I just keep laughing every time I think about Klaus being a father. He would make Darth Vader look like a good dad!

    • I think if The Originals is successful, there is a possiblity that Caroline may visit or stay.
Klaus is into the waitress anyway, but he left Caroline a message that may make her want to go and see him.

  • The pregnancy was stupid, but i liked the rest. Elijah was awesome as usual, especially his entrance in New Orleans and i will watch because of him.

    • I love Elijah, he is my favorite of all of the characters and Rebbekah.
The pregnancy is a cool and new twist that will make the show exciting.
Klaus will need to protect his baby and I'm sure when Marcel finds out about it will want to get rid of it.

  • So what I got from this is that Plec really, really, really, REALLY wanted to copy-paste Angel The Series and decided that its the best to throw entirety of plot of first three seasons of ATS into one pilot episode? Yeah....excuse me for continuing to not care about this show.

Man, how could this show fall so low. I kind of wish one day someone capable would remake it with none of this trainwreck nonsense

  • I've not watched it yet, but I think JP has read too much fanfiction.... And not very good ones.... What a horrible idea! Hayley pregnant by klaus??!! Why would she put a character nobody likes as a central one, and with that stupid storyline?

And I dont think that was necessary to make him likeable, if fans fall for him as a villan, why change that? It was what compels us to the character! They are many shows where the protagonist are not good, and that's what makes them interesting, not vamp babies...
I was looking forward to this series but now I'm afraid I wont stand it... unbelievable!

    • I actually love Klaus as a little evil but with a heart.
He will be the new star and needs to be good, I want him to kill marcel and then we will see him acting more evil.

    • to be honest, i was all over the vamp cub. maybe it was the maternal instinct in me, but the prospect of klaus babies made this episode that much better. okay, i liked. the lack of elena and the triangle made this episode that much better.

      also klaus babies.

  • Sometimes I wonder what I'm missing with Klaus. I hear about people love him but I find him the most divisive character on the show. But I'm a Bonnie fan so maybe I like divisive. I wish the Originals had more "Originals" and wasn't just what's looking like the Klaus Show 2.0. I think at least Kol, Rebekah, Elijah and Klaus would have given more narrative possibilities. Old school against new school. But again, that might be just because I miss Kol and felt like he did Klaus's job better (except the time he got murdered by a teen vampire hunter Jeremy and teen vampire Elena).

The pregnancy storyline was a twist; everything Elijah did was gold (except how quick he left Katerina). I get his brotherly loyalty but I'm not sure it gels with his last week comment of asking Klaus to let him be happy and then Klaus threatened his life for the 100000000000th time. Marcel was fun and dynamic but didn't seem as threatening as I thought he would be. And we get another story about witch subjugation...Great! I love how Vampire Diaries drives their point into the ground that vampires are the top of the food chain and witches are like even below human. I'll have less of that in the Originals please. What I would have liked though if Lucy Bennett turned up in New Orleans - had history with Marcel. Instant storyline. That would have been a twist. Somebody could be like "Where you been gurl?" And she could just look at the camera and say "Katherine." End scene. I'd tune in for that.

    • I doubt Lucy would show up. Plec is actually on record for having been asked about that character and not even remembering who she is.

  • Also, was I the only one unsettled by the last scene with Team Salvatore and Evil Elena? We get it! Elena is evil (reads more as dispassionate to me) without emotions. And yeah, I'll suspend disbelief that her storyline takes more importance than Silas ending the world with Bonnie who has the power to tear down the veil after tapping into the power of 36 ppl. But hey this show does mass genocide on the regular so no big right? But it's just unsettling that Team Salvatore are both ready and down for torturing the woman they love.

Love this show truly! But at its best, it can be all sorts of misogynistic but the idea of the two leads planning to to torture the lead female character until she can feel again just gives me all sorts of discomfort. Ripper Stefan and Evil Damon didn't get tortured like they are planning to do with her. Even if she does turn her humanity back on, she's not going to lose her memory. How are earth are they going to make either of these viable love interests after they abused and tortured her for her own good

    • I heard they're going to take it from the angle that Elena knows Damon wouldn't let her friends & Stefan hurt her too badly so they won't have an easy time turning her emotions back on.

    • actually ripper stefan did get tortured. remember what lexi did to him when she was brought back by bonni? and it seems to me like a lot of the other characters seem to hate damon

    • Lexie and Elena tortured Stefan when he turned Evil. The brothers are just doing the same to her.
She needs to be tortured, her character sucks. I want the old Elena back.

    • Yeah, I'm not a fan of this whole "we love you so much we must torture you so you turn back to normal" thing either. Especially when it is coming from a bunch of mass-murdering vampires. Elena is relatively harmless, esp considering how powerful her friends are in comparison. They could easily contain her or show her that her actions won't be tolerated. Bonnie does a pretty good job of that delivering brain aneurysms.Hypothetically they could just remove Elena's daylight ring so she doesn't have free reign of the town. Then just feed her blood bags and see whether or not she changes her mind about her so-called "apathetic" behavior.

      • And going a step further, why not build up a magical barrier so she can't escape from a small room or something. I'm pretty sure they could bug Bonnie for a second just for that then forget about her interactions with Silas yet again.

  • Yeah I was going to watch this episode as soon as I got off work but then I went on the TVD IMDB message board to get reactions and decided my quality of life was better without checking it out -_- So I went on to watch the new Scandal episode instead and I feel like that was a good decision :)

Sounds like Klaus is going to be making an appearance on Maury or Jeremy Kyle's show soon though.

  • Ok, this episode wasn't the best, but I remeber seeing the pilot for TVD and it was godawful, so... I'm sure it will get more and more compelling with each episode.
