Catfish: The TV Show recap: The one with the Myspace guy

**Disclaimer: This recap contains a lot of all caps.  Sorry I’m not sorry. I just got very excited about this episode**

GUYS! Guys guys guys guys guys.  CAN WE PLEASE TALK ABOUT CATFISH!?!?! As you probably noticed, I missed last week’s episode (I mean, I didn’t miss it, I just didn’t watch it soon enough to recap it in a timely manner) because of this thing called a real life.  It’s the worst, I know.  So I was already super jazzed about watching this week’s episode, but when I saw my friends raving about it on the internet (because I’m an old lady who needs to go to bed by 10pm and can’t watch it live), I KNEW this was going to be the best episode ever!

This week we met Lauren who is a single mother in Texas who has been talking to a boy named Derek online for 8 years, since she was 14 years old! She even broke off her engagement when Derek stopped talking to her online! However, over all of this time she has never even video chatted with this guy.  Max is rightfully skeptical at that.  “He’s ready to take care of her son but he can’t video chat with her?” Max speaks for the people!! Even Nev, the hopeless romantic, thinks this girl is a bit delusional for holding on to this guy for so long.

Despite their skepticism, Nev & Max solider on and begin their investigation and when they do, none of their usual tricks seem to work.  His images seem legit and his friends seems legit and suddenly, Nev becomes excited once more!! Max is still a Debbie Downer, but that is his role in this duo so it’s okay.  The only weird thing they find is that Derek’s phone number supposedly belongs to a married middle aged African American man, which would be QUITE the twist.

The boys show Lauren their findings, include the phone number owner, but she is still convinced that Derek is the guy she’s seen in all the pictures.  She’s still determined to follow through on this thing, so the next day Nev decides to give Derek a call.  Derek resists at first, but eventually he reluctantly gives in.  Nev & Max are concerned by his lack of enthusiasm, but that only adds to the intrigue.

Lauren and the boys head on over to Maryland to finally make this meeting happen and on the way to Derek’s place, Max’s skepticism is making Lauren feel bad and she gets mad at the boys for raining on her happy parade. Nev & Max explain that they need to prepare her for the worst, and after some more coddling they arrive at Derek’s house and Lauren is on the verge of a panic attack. The door opens and Derek is THE REAL DEREK OMG!! It’s actually him the boy from the pictures!!!!!! Nev is thrilled, obviously, and even Max has a little smile on his face.  YOU GUYS THEY CAN REALLY BE IN LOVE.

Sine Derek really appears to be who he said he was, the next step is for him to spill why he’s been so reluctant to meet for so long.  But he says he has been honest about everything the whole time,  he just wanted everything to be perfect when he met his perfect dream girl in real life. AWWW YOU GUYS!! He was just nervous to meet her!!! This is like my favorite thing that ever happened.  Just like Nev I was smiling like a fool throughout the whole second half of the episode.  These kids are just too adorable.  They even go out on a date all by themselves without Nev and Max!

After their wonderful date, Lauren brings her 4-year old son, Mason, to meet Derek.  They go on a tractor ride and visit a petting zoo and Mason takes right to Derek.  It is just so precious to my heart and THIS is exactly why I started watching this show.

In the two month check up, Derek and Lauren are actually visiting each other so they get to webchat with Nev & Max together!! And Lauren is going to move to Maryland to be near him!! And they want to get engaged!!! This is literally the best thing that ever happened in the history of the world and I have never been so joyous after watching a television show.  Finally true love on Catfish!!! (And according to the After Show they are still together to this day!)

  • Gotta say that I was equally surprised with this one, even knowing the outcome. I caught the 11 p.m. repeat — except it actually repeated at 11:30 p.m. so I saw the ending and was spoiled. And even after realizing that they didn't try to Skype that it could lead to him being actually him … and yet still surprised.

And I can totally understand the reasoning for him being all never-meeting-her and stuff. Surprising and predictable, just like every Catfish episode!
