In “Interns,” Mike Henry forces his daughter, Eve, to become an intern at WNBC. The entire point of it was so that he could require her to spend time with him. Of course, this is something she doesn’t want to do. However, she ends up liking the experience because that Susie Rodriguez-Jones uses her for an exposé on underage drinking.
The entire time Susie was using Eve, but Eve was also using Susie. Susie spends most of her time plotting ways to destroy Mike. For some reason, Susie doesn’t like him, even though Mike is responsible for her career. It makes her look like a vindictive jerk, but the audience is never told why.
Newsroom scenes are the weakest part of The Michael J. Fox Show, yet Mike’s home life isn’t much better. Everywhere he goes, Mike’s life is a mess. At home, his sister, Leigh, constantly need attention. She’s worse than his kids. In this episode, Leigh insists that Mike’s wife, Annie, read her smutty first chapter of a book about a boy that turns into a horse. Annie says it’s terrible. She’s surprised that Leigh actually takes the feedback and doesn’t throw a temper tantrum.
While Mike and Annie are concerned about insulting Leigh, they forget to pay attention to their kids. Their oldest son, Ian, always has to watch their youngest son, Graham. Ian is really irresponsible. He couldn’t stay in college because he has big dreams of starting the next Facebook from Graham’s bedroom. The problem is Ian doesn’t know what he is doing. Despite not having a business or a good idea, Ian tries to find an intern because Eve went off to work with their father. It doesn’t work because everyone figures out that Ian is just a kid working out of his parents’ house.
No one learns anything in The Michael J. Fox Show, but the show likes to think it’s teaching lessons. The only lesson it teaches is that Leigh needs to grow up and Mike and Annie probably should have stopped having kids after Ian.
