So we hardly ever have posts about Revenge here on NoWhiteNoise, which will hopefully end soon since a new writer Brianna is going to be onboard, but I need for us to discuss it here! Even if I’m late in bringing it up. I suppose I could go to a Revenge forum and geek out about it but… I don’t know those people, I know you guys. And it saddens me that we hardly talk about what I think is the best show on TV currently.
“Chaos” is the episode in the making since the beginning of the series… that it was almost season finale material. It wasn’t quite there, but a little extra oomph and it would have been. Regardless, for an episode in the middle of the season, it surely did pack a punch (and a gunshot).
THE NOT-SO SHOCKING TWIST | Most people had it pegged that Tyler would be the one who was going to try and exact murderous revenge at Read-Amanda and Daniel’s engagement party. So when his unmedicated self made an appearance at the very beginning, it wasn’t so much shocking as… well, just really fun to watch! Tyler teamed up with Real-Emily to take her down… and take her money. But what she didn’t know was that Tyler planned on killing Daniel and framing Real-Amanda — and at their own party!
THE TWIST WE DIDN’T SEE COMING | But regardless of that, what you probably didn’t think would happen (at least I didn’t) was the mystery not being who was shot but who shot Tyler! In the beginning we see someone wearing a leather jacket and gloves, removing a piece of paper from an unconscious Daniel’s hands. Then, that same hand (or is it? all we get is a shot of the gloves this time) takes two shots. We later learn that it’s not two shots at Daniel, but at Tyler.
AMANDA’S SECRETS | That piece of paper by the way, apparently could have outed Emily as Amanda Clarke. Before Tyler dragged Daniel away from the party, he showed him a picture and said that “Emily” had been playing everyone. What will come of that, I wonder? Perhaps nothing for a while since Daniel has apparently lost his memory of the night.
EVERYONE ELSE | Unfortunately, Ashley had little to do but walk around. (Does that make her the perfect suspect you’d never guess!?) I was kind of disappointed, seeing as she’s been transitioning into a Revenge revenge player, but nope. She gets bupkis during the pivotal hour. Jack doesn’t sail to Haiti even though he wants to. And the kids are not all right, in fact Amanda’s sister might be taking a liking to prescription drugs.
WHODUNIT | So who shot Tyler? Real-Amanda? Real-Emily? Daniel? Amanda’s Sensei? And what did you think about this episode?
Personally, I found the hour to be quite clever. I’ve been reading around that others are calling it a copout (I wanted Daniel to stay alive but I agree that killing him off would have been much more shocking) and that there are too many plot holes — but we haven’t seen the entirety of the night’s events unfold yet. As far as I’m concerned, someone was wearing gloves when they shot Tyler… that could have been anyone. I find myself very intrigued for the last part of this season.
Did you feel like it was a copout? Or are you intrigued by the new mystery!?

It was a cop out to use Tyler and kill him instead of Daniel, but there was no better alternative. If Daniel had died, it would have not only been upsetting, but it wouldn't have been surprising since that's pretty much what we've been expecting to see since the first few minutes of the pilot.
As for whodunit, you have brought up an interesting point with the Sensei possibly being the shooter. I didn't think of that before, but since he was with Real-Emily, it has to be either him or her.
I'm intrigued by the accusation of Daniel and the inevitable trial. We'll be able to see Real Amanda and Victoria go through a shared experience at the trial of a loved one, sort of a parallel to what happened with Amanda's dad way back when.
I don't think it would been so unsurprising since they were making it seem like he was a red herring.
As for the shooter, could it possibly also be real-Amanda? I'd have to rewatch but I think she could have had time between the shootings. I could be delusional. Probably am. And why did Nolan say Jack got on the boat? Did I miss something? I'm definitely going to need to rewatch it.
I don't think it could have been Real-Amanda since she was asking about Daniel's whereabouts and calling his phone when Charlotte ran half naked screaming to the party. Unless she and Daniel conspired together to kill Tyler and she just wanted to know why he wasn't back...? But she seemed extremely concerned that it was Daniel who was dead on the beach. Then again, Emily van Camp's acting isn't exactly something to go by.
Nolan said Jack got on the boat because he saw Jack get on the boat before Real-Emily showed up. By that point, he had handed his Camu tablet to his body guard.
I would kind of love if it was Nolan who killed Tyler. He was probably the one that was most screwed over by Tyler so bitch deserves it. It also would have further shown his love for Real-Amanda. In a sibling way, of course. Still waiting for the "twist" that they are actually related.
I kind of like them being brother and sister without actually having to be brother and sister. We already had that twist. Besides, it wouldn't really a shocking since they (somewhat) like each other. They're just so perfect.
So basically, I want the show to return and answer some questions already!
While I was blind-sided that Daniel survived the shooting, it makes total sense - how many more people can they kill off in a first season right??? I think the whodunnit mystery will carry over to next season, and I think it's a good lead in.
For me, the greatest mystery, however, is how much Tyler told Daniel before he was killed? Wouldn't it be delicious if Daniel now knows everything and is all about getting revenge for HIS family? It would certainly perpetuate the notion that everyone to some extent has a motive to avenge a perceived wrong.
I honestly didn't think it was a copout. I was completely shocked when they turned the body over and it wasn't Daniel because I'd been so sure it was him. So for me it was just a great twist. The show is just getting started and Daniel being alive allows for much more in terms of potential plot twist. So I'm happy with it.
