Dear Showrunners: Want to keep your series on air? Make sure I’m not a fan!

Dear Showrunners,

I am writing this letter to inform you of an important, all too dire issue. I have a little known illness — well, I’ve been known to call it a curse — in which the shows I become a fan of just… get canceled.

It’s true! I can’t explain it rationally. All I know is that it happens. Let me clarify: it’s not every show that I watch that gets canceled, but it’s the ones that I’m a fan of the most. Of course, there have been exceptions to this, but for the most part it’s just become a reality.

I was a diehard fan of Veronica Mars. Bam — canceled. I watched Ghost Whisperer week per week. Boom — done-zo! Dollhouse. Gone. Reaper. Bye. Life Unexpected. Oh, it was expected. I can go on and on and on…

Sometimes I think that I actively seek out sure-to-get-canceled programming. I hear that can happen a lot when you’ve been in one-too-many canceled show relationships. Maybe I don’t think I deserve a show with wide viewership and steady ratings. In fact, the reason I got involved with Chuck in the first place is because I heard it was probably going to get canceled. It then became my favorite show of all time. Thankfully, while being on the bubble for three years, it survived them all.

But my heart has been broken time and time again by investing in shows and then having them yanked from my living room like nothing.

And now, in the midst of another television season, I’ve offered myself up to several shows that I’m sure are going to get canceled yet again. Why do I do this to myself? I think the one that’s going to hit hardest is Ringer.

So if you’ve been wondering why your show got canceled, if try all you could you couldn’t get viewership up, and you studied all factors, you probably forgot just one: Was I watching? Am I fan of your show? If the answer is yes, then your show is most likely not to make it through the season. It’s The Curse.

I know I should probably stop watching television for the greater good of having millions of others watch your show’s (or shows’) amazingness… but I’m greedy! I can’t not watch. That would almost be worse. Instead, since I don’t have the willpower to do that, I urge you to make sure I never become a fan of your show. If you could have a series be on air for as long as you desire by having just one person not watch: wouldn’t you do it?

So why aren’t you?
