Continuum 1×06 ‘Time’s Up’ recap: Knowledge is power

How intense was this episode, you guys?! It was really great; they’ve upped their game for the final five episodes of the season. Before this episode, I couldn’t really see why Liber8 was so dangerous in the future or even in the present. Sure they’ve murdered a couple of people, but the threat was never really alarming. This episode showed us that violence isn’t their biggest threat, their knowledge is their greatest weapon! And also, Kiera got played!

It all started with a seemingly harmless demonstration for transparency. It was kind of ridiculous that Kiera didn’t know what they meant with transparency, ok she’s from the future but she’s not dumb! Or the future sucks basically.

After the previous fight with Alec, Julian decided to do something about his beliefs and joined an anarchistic movement. They went to the same demonstration and began to trash everything. The big boss of Exotrol (the business everyone was demonstrating about) decided to flee the building but was kidnapped by Travis in the process. At first they couldn’t see who took her, because the security cameras were scrambled. Which struck me as odd, because that security dude was proclaiming he had more access in the security world than the police.

It didn’t really take long for Liber8 to air an online stream of the big boss, organizing a switch. 20 million dollars for the boss or she would die! They agreed on this to lure them out of their cages, but it backfired. Liber8 ordered the police to give the money to the people who were demonstrating. ‘Give the money back to the people!’ Another stream emerged where the people could decide if the big boss would die or not. Whilst waiting they could also read the manifesto of Liber8. This was a great way to reach to the people, people love to be in charge and it was a great way to circulate their manifesto!

Meanwhile, it became clear that the kidnapping wasn’t all on Liber8. A few men of Exotrol made the arrangements for the kidnapping but it blew up in their faces. They never agreed on her dying and Liber8 had their own agenda! I knew that the lady wasn’t going to die, but I thought Kiera would save her or something. Turns out this lady and mostly every big boss like her in America, had been scamming the regular people and had been tapping in their pension funds. Liber8 just wanted an online confession of this lady, which she made under the impression that she was going to die.

Our Alec also told his stepfather and mother the truth about Julian, the father became rather violent towards his son when he confronted him. If I was Julian, I would be pissed too. He was finally doing something proactive, something that he thought was right and every family member is dissing him. Anyway, yeah Alec just created an enemy. An enemy who happens to live in the same house! Ruh-roh!

Ok yeah, I almost forgot about Kellog! He’s just looking out for himself, and stole the missing piece of the time travel device from Kiera’s apartment! Kiera has every right to distrust him, but how long will it take for her to realize Kellog is the culprit!

All in all, this was the best episode yet! It gave us a taste of how intense the final episodes could be with Liber8 creating a name for themselves. (And Kiera’s husband is still a douche!)

  • It feels like we're shaping up for a big reveal that Greg - the husband - is the big villain of the show. Every episode unveils a new shady, sinister quality about him. Dear Greg: when "criminals" are stealing food because they're starving, you're living in a dystopia.

Not that Liber8 are coming off well, either. Like you, loving how much the stakes have been raised, especially now that their message is catching on. Kiera can defeat them hand to hand, but can she stop the message? She would do well to bring Carlos and Alec into this more because she's gonna need help!

    Our take: https://wp.me/p1VQBq-15X

    • I think Carlos is one of these guys who will remain oblivious throughout the season, but yeah she's going to need help from other guys. Because now she has nothing, since Kellog stole that other piece!

      • I don't think Carlos is that oblivious. This episode gives me feeling that he is growing increasingly suspicious of her.

  • Kiera doesn't k now what transparency meant in that context because the corporations re-wrote the history books and the word only has a technological connotation in 2077. Kiera should know by now not to say dumb things like that though.

It was obvious that the security guard was in on it. I've seen that trope many times.

Kellog's got the Terry's chocolate orange slice!

    • Yeah that's what I meant by saying that the future sucks, I feel like she would know better to say these things. Like 'I've never seen a horse in real life'!

      • I have a hard time believing Carlos didn't hear her say that (he conveniently looked away) or the comment about it being "a long story."

        • Maybe he thinks she's a part from a superintelligent cult, who has never seen horses or hides political backgrounds from their followers! No I'm just kidding! :p I think it strange, but in the beginning he did ask her about these things and she'd never answer. So maybe he thinks 'what's the point in asking..'

  • I love how they are adding, more and more gray morality into this. Neither side is right and yet both sides are in some aspects.

Kierra's husband is fishy. Might be a kind of "good person" with bad morals kind of deal. Someone who is a loving father and husband yet sees nothing wrong with people starving or corporations having dictatorship-like power.

The only thing I did not like about the episode is that Carlos saved Kiera AGAIN. let the girl do her job too once in a while or if he has to save her make it because she is in one against two kind of situation. Carlos saving her from a mere corporate mooks sends the wrong kind of message about sexism and hopefully its one-kind of a deal and it won't be a running theme with him saving her every time. Just a small nitpick, I know, but that's how shows start to fall usually.

    • Yeah I agree about him saving her, although she did save him couple episodes back. I just don't want to get a 'Carlos saves Kiera' vibe every single episode... But from the promo it seems like Kiera has to 'save' Carlos this time, so we'll see I guess
