It seems to me as though Pretty Little Liars is one of those shows in which almost every single episode is a “big” episode. I could be wrong about that (considering that I’ve only seen a few episodes) but I would imagine that this season has been not at all disappointing for its die-hard fans—at least not so far.
Last week’s episode ‘Bird’s of a Feather’ begins with the four liars sitting together at a restaurant, quietly debating whether or not Spencer’s older sister Melissa could in fact have been the black swan that they all saw at the masquerade ball. While this conversation is going on, Alison’s older brother Jason suddenly bursts through the restaurant door and stomps over to Spencer’s mother, demanding why she has decided to defend Garret—the boy who has been charged for murdering Alison—in trial. Spencer’s mother simply brushes it off as “everyone deserves a fair chance,” but Jason (like me and everybody else watching this show) is unconvinced. Worried, Spencer follows Jason as he storms out of the restaurant, and she is surprised at seeing signs posted everywhere outside—signs that promise a 50,000 dollar reward for information on the whereabouts of Alison’s remains. Moments later, the liars receive another mysterious text that says: “Imagine what I could do with fifty grand.” Hmmm. This might be a stupid question, but…is it even possible to send text messages from an unknown number? Last time I checked, it isn’t. And if it is, then you undoubtedly would have to have some sort of special phone to pull it off, like one built by the CIA. Well, maybe not the CIA, but regardless, it’s obvious that this person (A) knows what the hell he/she is doing when it comes to technology. I’m not going to lie, if I ever got a text from an unknown number…I would be freaking terrified.
Meanwhile, Emily suddenly receives an unexpected visit from Nate, Maya’s cousin. Apparently Nate moved to town initially planning to spend more time with Maya, but now that she’s dead…well, there’s really no one around that he knows. He remembered Maya going on and on about how great Emily is, and so he decided he’d find her and introduce himself. Emily is happy to meet him, although his presence undoubtedly brings back painful memories for her.. Emily meets up with Nate a couple times, and he seems nice, but I admit that I was somewhat suspicious of him by the end of the episode. He abruptly announces that he is going to leave town, simply because there is nothing for him there. So let me get this straight. He transferred to a new school only to leave a short time later? In the middle of the semester? That’s not exactly practical…it made me wonder if he’s even in school at all. Maybe he came to town for another reason? Or maybe he’s been in town longer than we think? I don’t know, but somehow I doubt that we’ve seen the last of this guy. I might be thinking too much on this one, but…just throwing some thoughts out there for you all.
As for Hannah? She has discovered that Mona’s visiting privileges have recently been taken away. Apparently she lashed out at a visitor, and the nurses there at the psych ward fear that she might hurt someone. At first Hannah believes the visitor to have been Lucas, but when she finds out that it was Caleb…she’s pretty pissed. I don’t know about you all, but I was on Caleb’s side here. I’ll admit that at first I didn’t like him very much, but after seeing just a few episodes I think it’s obvious that he really does care about Hannah; he was only trying to look out for her when he went to talk to Mona, and I think Hannah is sort of being a bitch for not telling him the truth about everything. I mean, I get that she chose to keep lying to him because she and her friends are indirectly responsible for his mother’s recent accident (courtesy of the mysterious A) but come on. If you can’t be upfront and honest with the person that you are dating, then maybe you should break up with them—which Caleb does, when Hannah still refuses to open up to him. Can’t say I blame him for doing what he did, but I feel sorry for Hannah, nonetheless. I still say something is going to happen between her and that doctor at the psych ward, but eh, we’ll see, I guess.
I would say that the huge part of this episode was (of course) the last ten to fifteen minutes. The little liars decide that they need to know once and for all whether or not Melissa was the black swan at the masquerade ball. Together the little liars successfully break into Melissa’s apartment and search for any evidence that might point to her having been there. In Melissa’s apartment they find a feather that matches those that were part of the black swan’s costume…meaning that it’s time for Spencer to step up and confront her sister. Which she does, and Melissa tearfully tells her that on the night of the ball she received a note and a dress from an anonymous person telling her to wear the dress to the ball and to distract Jenna. Apparently the note said that if she didn’t do it, everyone would find out that she lied about losing her baby. Spencer believes her, and later that night she goes on a walk and meets up with Jason, Alison’s brother. He tells her that he is going to withdraw the reward because he doesn’t believe that anyone is going to be truthful about finding Alison’s body. As soon as Spencer walks away, however, we see that this isn’t true. Apparently someone (presumably A) has called him and claimed to have Alison’s body in their possession. Oh, and I was right about this person being a whiz with technology. At the end we see a person with black leather gloves sitting in an airport on their laptop computer. Somehow they have managed to hack into the website of the psych ward that Mona is in, and make it so that it says she is now permitted to have visitors. Yeah…this show has got all kinds of weird twists and turns; I’ll admit that I’m a little confused at this point—mainly because everyone is lying so damn much—but I guess that’s why they call it Pretty Little Liars, right?
I never thought I would say this, but I am intrigued by this show, to the point where I feel like watching it from the beginning so that I know more of what’s going on. Hopefully it’s on Netflix or Xfinity. Now that I’m out of school I need something to do to in my spare time. I can watch this one in addition to The O.C., however, unfortunately The O.C. is nowhere to be found online, and I am currently waiting on a friend to send me the first season so that I can continue with my reviews. Sorry I have failed to post episode seven lately…expect to see that one this week! Peace.
