The final season of Gossip Girl has finally commenced. It was an hour that included schemes, lies, and backstabbing — so, you know, a pretty traditional hour of the UES soap. But was it an improvement of seasons past or was it just the same, rehashed? Here’s what we thought of the premiere:
Samantha | I thought it was so-so. Pretty predictable, but much better than the majority of season 5.
Aditi | I think it was a solid premiere. It followed a nice straight line and acting was great as always, so I will give it a 7/10.
Michael | I thought it was just okay as well, but somewhere in the last ten minutes I was actually really feeling it and kind of got excited. I think it was around the time when Ivy tried to seduce Rufus. Well, succeeded in seducing Rufus.
Samantha | Can we talk about Ivy’s contortion skills under that afghan? What was going on with her legs there? It was fascinating! Anyway, I’m totally team Rivy. If I can’t have Vufus, Rivy is the next best thing.
Aditi | Barf? Like, yes, Rufus is a hot dad, but him hooking up with his son’s ex ONS is just pure gross. Also, remember Dan’s disturbed face when he saw them together? Yeah, that was me the entire time they were in scenes together. Sleaaaaazy.
Michael | I mean, Dan and Ivy kissed for like fifteen seconds. He probably doesn’t even know about that. So obviously, the most important part about this is their sexual position because HOW was that even possible? But also, what is the game that Ivy’s playing here? I’m very intrigued by it. I’m guessing she somehow wants to destroy Lily for awarding her $1 million. (Ugh, but Ivy is so perfect regardless.)
Samantha | Team Friends! Sabrina is just acting out her daddy issues (again). She will come around.
Aditi | Team Sabrina. Poor S has dealt with enough crap over the last year that she deserves this little break from reality. Plus, what would summer be if Serena isn’t off pretending to be someone else?
Michael | Ugh, I can’t believe I’m saying this but… Team Sabrina. I know that Serena was acting like a total ridiculous person last season, but when she said to Nate and Chuck, “You couldn’t even send a text?” It was like, seriously could you not even send a 160-character message to one of your best friends? Though her mom did and she didn’t respond, so… Oh and Lily, by the way, when did she become the world’s worst mom again?
Samantha | Ugh, the pact makes NO SENSE! I know that is kind of this show’s “thing” lately, but come on. All that stuff about not wanting to blame her and being a man and blah blah blah. What was he even saying?? Why can’t they just be naked in the limo all season long?
Aditi | In favour of. I think they’ve finally reached a place where we all know they’re going to end up together, so I’m determined to enjoy the ride. Plus, that diamond ring gooooorgeous!
Michael | Preach, Samantha! What is this EVEN? Of all the rehashed plots on Gossip Girl over the years, this is one of the most tiring ones.
Samantha | He is actually dead and this person is just Cece with some surgery. Of course.
Aditi | Diana Payne is his twin sister. … I kid. I have no idea. This whole storyline is so random.
Michael | You’re both wrong. He’s obviously Diana Payne (yes, even though he was standing right next to her, I hold on to this). To be honest with you, I have to rewatch to understand who this new lady was and see the tone of the scene as to why he’d want to pay her off, but I really hope he’s Gossip Girl because why not.
Samantha | Was anyone else disturbed by the poor excuses for “Europe”? Remember when this show actually got to film in Paris? Sigh…those were the days.
Aditi | Nate’s new girlfriend looks boring. Can we please talk about Dan and Georgina? Those two hit it out of the park this episode. Besides the whole “OMG do that again” scene, I enjoyed Dan/Georgina interactions the most. Actually, all Georgina interactions. I love her. So glad she’s sticking around the rest of the season!
Michael | I actually was surprised at how much Georgina was NOT grating this episode. She’s always been a character that was better in small doses to me, and I liked her this episode too. Samantha, I agree, why were they in Europe for something they could have done in New York? Nate’s girlfriend plot is SOOOO original, guys, what is everyone talking about? Oh, but what IS it that he has on Gossip Girl? He sent her a video of her hands. I don’t understand it. But I think it’s great that Nate blackmailed someone because he’s smart now. And finally, I kind of felt that the whole two guys marrying thing had no payoff whatsoever. It was absolutely trite. I thought an even BIGGER bomb was going to land, like Serena’s not getting married BUT she’s pregnant! or…she wrote a tell-all too! or…something!
Samantha | B- Better than the train wreck of last season, but definitely not completely amazing.
Aditi | 7/10 for effort, good acting, and actually trying to stay on task.
Michael | I give this one a solid B. It wasn’t BAD. But we obviously need to give the show at least one transitional episode to get better after last year. Yeesh! So, I think we should be lenient in that way. Also, the dialogue was really, really on point. Kudos there!

I almost vomited seeing Rufus ABS annoying Ivy hook up. The UES is a SMALL place; the only thing they needed was Dan and Cece bumping uglies. As for the "pact", they can't have Blair and Chuck getting together SO soon, it would be too much sexiness to handle all season. No one talked about Dan lying about loving Blair unconditionally, but this is NoWhiteNoise...
*Rufus and
Wth...
Yeah I caught that too because he didn't love her unconditionally (tripping out everytime she was hanging out with NJBC and acting insecure is loving someone unconditional), he only loved her as Claire and while stating all this did he forget he bumped uglies with Serena before knowing he got dumped and then went on to bitch at her even when she had been trying to talk to him all summer. I would have understand him being upset had Blair been ignoring him all summer but it was opposite so he has no reason to be upset over no closure.
Dan definitely deserved that slap from Serena.
As for the pact for me it the first time it made sense and Chuck's reasons for it was solid...I also found it tacky that Blair hooked up with Dan while still being married and after declaring undying love for Chuck the millionth time...so them jumping into full straight-on relationship wouldn't do it for this viewer.
no response to the dan/blair interaction? imo all of the actors just gave up and don't care anymore
Whoa! We totally forgot to even comment on it. O_O Personally, I think that they really needed to actually speak, so I'm glad that they did, since they ended so awfully-written(ly). However, and I was just on the GGirlsss podcast where this was also stated, it feels like Blair didn't even say anything or try to defend herself. So that was kind of a bust. That said, I see them using her talk with Dan as more him getting under her skin to cause DRAMA! with the pact and whatnot.
I can't speak for Samantha and Aditi, however.
My comment: LOL DAN THINKS HE LOVED HER UNCONDITIONALLY! HAHAHAHAHAHAhahahaha. Ha. Hahaha. Ha ha haaaaaaaaaaa
Okay, I think I'm done. I'm sorry, that was the most ridiculous thing that was ever said in the history of this ridiculous show.
Otherwise, their interaction was so unimportant that I almost forgot about it.
uhhh...wtf.
The reason for Chuck and Blair not being togheter is that people get bored of them, just like every other couple on this show... The writers just like UST or whatever...
I'm still hoping they got Eric or Jenny back at least for 1 episode, because they can't end this without showing my favorite characters one more time.
Overall it was an entertaining episode, that's good enough for me.
I don't think Nate was ever blackmailing GG because his story isn't going to go anywhere- the evidence he got doesn't actually reveal anything. I think GG kind of fancies Nate and gives him Serena's location anyway in exchange for killing his story to save future embarrassment. She even poke jibes at him after that when Serena doesn't want to come back. I mean, come on, since when gossip girl IMs people? It's like both of them are chatting on MSN on something.
Chuck and Blair make me barf (Public Relations - Relations in Public? Exotic translator?) FFS. Rufus and Ivy make me barf (and now I can't stop thinking about tarantulas). Lily and Bart make me barf (can I call it necrophilia?).
Like Michael, I also liked Georgina in this ep, even though I usually can't take her for more than 2.48 minutes.
And Dan was all about this important trip to Italy, writing and learning 'n sh- and he just dumps all that to chill with Georgina and type sh- on a typewriter?! Give me a break.
I'm glad Serena has found some stability, I hope it lasts (lol). So team Sabrina.
Also, I think I ship Nate and GG now. Nossip Nearl? GGate?
I was kind of hoping this episode would make sense after the train wreck finale... guess the joke's on me.
1. I can't believe I am saying, well, actually typing this, but the premiere felt like old times, not the great s1 times, but somewhere around s2-ish good old times. Look, it just shows when an episode is written by the people who made the show awesome then when it is written by the woman who decided Blair should make a pact with God.
2. Gross. What was up with Ivy's legs? P.S. Loved Michael's Tarantula position caption on this,
3. Actually Team Sabrina. Serena had a point, she wanted a new fresh start and taking into account that none of her "friends" checked in on her over the summer....girl was right. I actually liked everything about Serena this episode, especially because she didn't give Steven that whole speech about how she was a lost rich girl with no friends who needed help. I feel like this thing she has with Steven is real and she really wants to make it work. Besides Blair acted like a child at that wedding.
4. "OMG, 9 more episodes of this" - is all I can say.
5. That he is Gossip Girl
6. How ridiculous were Chuck's outfits and Dan's hair? Very.
7. Like I said in answer 1, the show felt like old times - great soundtrack, whenever GG uses music by The Ting Tings,Ladyhawke and the XX, you just know the episode will be good, AND there was an actual storyline in this episode, where all the characters were involved, so yeah, great effort. However, the Chair pact and Dan's hair, and the overuse of Georgina, that is why I give this episode a C+.
As someone who seems to be in the minority here, I love Dan's little speech to Blair because I think it was exactly what she needed to hear. She'll probably ignore it for a few episodes, but she deserves better.
As someone who is a Dair fan, I read all kinds of things into every moment they had on screen and liked the episode way more than I thought I would.
Dan makes me barf.
Dan was hypocritical in the 1st and 2nd episode actually when he was talking about his love for Blair and the hurt its caused him. Sir you just said you loved that woman unconditionally then you turn around and say you want to get back at them for being the reason your sister left the state.
Jenny Humphrey sure wasn't on your brain when you had Blair hitched up in that elevator.
Any update on when the photo recap for ep 2 will be up?
