Gossip Girl Roundtable: Series Finale ‘New York, I Love You XOXO’

Time for us to discuss the final episode of Gossip Girl ever. What happened in this episode? Chuck and Blair get married; Serena and Dan get married; Kristen Bell is there; Nate kind of had a storyline — not really; Dan says he’s gossip girl and no one cares; hundreds find solace in the hilarity of Dan being GG on Tumblr.

It was magical.

1. Do you think it was a satisfying ending?

Samantha | It was good. I liked that they brought so many people back. I thought the redemption of Dan was super rushed and a little unsatisfying. You can’t make him SO evil then expect him to be happy with no repercussions for his actions.

Michael | Yes and no. Stephanie Savage said in an interview that not everything is tied up in a nice, little bow. I automatically hate when showrunners say that because is that not the point of a series finale — to answer all the questions? This at one time was the lowest rated show on all of television, there are about zero chances this will be resurrected in any form: answer the questions, showrunners. In short, plot-wise, I don’t think this was a satisfying finale. But at this point the series promised few things: the identity of Gossip Girl and Chair and Derena; in those respects, it was satisfying — though I think the way they revealed GG’s identity was a little boring.

Monika | I mean, what is “satisfying” given what this show became near the end? There was no way the writers could have come up with anything that would have made this whole mess alright. I guess, if I had to pick satisfying aspects, I kind of like how they tried to really tie the episode back to the major theme of the show of an outsider trying to fit in. I also really liked seeing the “flashback” since we had never actually seen the party before and only heard about it. It made me kind of nostalgic. What I really hated though was the flash forward five years later. I don’t like when shows do that kind of thing because it always ends up being cheesy.

Michael | Yeah, I guess if I think about it more, the things that happened were satisfying. But it felt anticlimactic. That’s probably because everything about it was leaked. Whoops.

2. The secret’s out! Dan’s Gossip Girl. Satisfied? Not satisfied?

Samantha | MAKES NO SENSE! As I’ve been proclaiming on facebook, tumblr, and my other recap, I’m rewatching the early seasons and pointing out why this makes no sense.  Because it doesn’t. dumb dumb dumb.

Siao | I can’t respond to the other questions, as I’m a bit behind on the last few episodes. But can I say to the thought of Dan being Gossip Girl – UGHH. I can’t comment on the nature of the reveal, but from what I’ve seen, I agree it just makes. No. Sense. Sure, Dan’s always been intrigued in the UES world. And he has his character flaws (most of them are hilarious) – his intense judginess, pretentious nature and that ability he has to believe he is always right. But it’s these flaws that make it impossible for him to be Gossip Girl. You know with him writing, Gossip Girl would be called ‘Confabulation Girl’ and be filled with angry rants about consumerism. And with his insistence that he’s above everyone else, I can’t see him selling out his friends (Nate, Vanessa) or especially his little sister in the way Gossip Girl has. He’s always been there for his family, more than anyone else (except possibly Rufus when it comes to breakfast foods). I’m just hoping when I watch the last few episodes I can comprehend it a little more.

Michael | Siao, you have it all wrong. Little J knew about it all along. Otherwise, worst kept secret ever! And the foreshadowing this season was insane. But whatever, I don’t know what else to say. This obviously makes no sense unless Dan is (A) a sociopath who reads his own blog and reacts to news when he’s alone in a room, who also emails himself and (B) has clones of himself to post things for him. I would have accepted a Jenny/Dan duo more. But in the end, I think it’s also hilarious and why not? “I’ve written awful stuff about all of us over the years, ain’t that a hoot!?” My new favorite Internet thing is reading instances of when Dan obviously couldn’t be GG.

Monika | LOL what? I think we could do another entire roundtable just covering how this isn’t possible?? But seriously, I do like the idea of Dan being GG. It makes sense in theory. However, obviously given things we’ve actually seen on the show (such as Dan reacting to posts when he’s alone lol) it just doesn’t make sense. I got the sense that the writers hadn’t chosen the identity of GG until last season or so. If they had known from the beginning that Dan was GG and actually written the entire show with that in mind, it would have been a lot more awesome at the end. Instead, we’re all left scratching our heads like “Uh, so Dan is basically kind of a sociopath?”

3. What did you think of all the ending couples?

Samantha | CARTERENA FOREVER!! No but really, why didn’t Carter show up? Also, LOVED Rufus with Lisa Loeb and Lily with William.  Every husband deserves a second try.

Michael | To be honest, I’m confused about Rufly. What happened to Rufus and Lily? So confused.

Monika | Eh, they ended as I expected. Once Dair didn’t happen, I knew Derena/Chair would be endgame so I wasn’t surprised. I am surprised that Lily ended up with the Dr. though. That is so weird and creepy. I’m pissed about how Ivy ended up, too! I feel like if anyone deserved a happy ending, it was her.

4. Did I forget anything?

Samantha | Jack Bass is a true gem and even with his meth face I wish he had been around more often.

Michael | YES. The absurd amount of amazing cameos! Kristen Bell was just the most amazing thing that happened to this show. Thank you. Also that flashback was crazily on point. And also, Nate might be a mayor? Please stop me from laughing this hard.

Monika | I feel like the more I think about Dan being GG, the more creeped out I am that Serena actually ended up marrying him. Seriously, Dan wrote terrible things about everybody he loved and cared about, including his own family, and Serena called it a “love letter”! WHAT? I also felt like this episode was very weak compared to the last few because the aftermath of the Bart storyline ended up taking a backseat to the Dan-is-GG storyline and the Chair wedding. Chuck really didn’t feel bad about letting his own father die right in front of him? And we didn’t even see a single interrogation scene with the police and Chuck? LAME.

5. What grade would you give this episode?

Samantha | A++ I am so happy with this. I haven’t had this many feels since the season 2 finale. I don’t know what I’ll do with my life now.

Michael | A? B? C? $?! I thought the previous couple of episodes were more entertaining. One-third of this was seriously Dan and Serena talking in the same room. What? The one thing that truly annoys me about this season is that no one learned anything. These people are the worst and they go on with life, living close to each other. “I’m Gossip Girl!” “I love you!” “Scheming is immature and beneath you.” “Ef it, I’m just going to scheme forever!” “I define myself by my relationships with men. Ah, whatever, just gonna continue doing that” “I ruined your life so that you’ll take me back as a husband!” “Awesome, I love you so much.” But on the other hand, I think by now the writers knew this and were just like: “Whatever. Let’s build up an entire season of them knowing this and deciding to do nothing about it. Also, let’s have Kristen Bell wink at them.” These people live in a vacuum, where they can’t face any real consequences or they will shut down. They’re in an asylum and pretending this is real. Gossip Girl is actually an orderly commanding them around. Rufus is the warden. Kristen Bell is the voice in everyone’s heads. The writers don’t care; they wink at you! Congratulations on making us feel so many things, regardless of what those feels are.

  • Ivy did not deserve to be happy. When was a conniving, liar of a con-artist. But of course that's just my opinion...

  • lol dan imagines himself as kristen bell, i really don't what to feel, i had the whole day preparing for this even installing the hdmi to our 40 inch telly and bought food but i felt fucking cheated out of this epi,, and PS dan humphrey is a closet fag

  • Ugh, does the fact that I hated this make me a bad fan? I mean, because the whole episode was basically spoiled months ago, I feel like nothing actually happened, there were no plot twists (we were promised so many of those! "Oh, you will be so shocked, OMG!!!" Yeah, no.), the acting was bad, nothing made sense, NO ONE CARED ABOUT DAN BEING GG WHAT. Chuck/Blair were all "Omg, they're going to throw us in jail, let's get married!! LOL, kidding, actually nothing happened and we just came home five minutes later, no big deal." Also, hello, Dan is GG (and a sociopath, basically) and he's sitting in your home and laughs at you like it's nobody's business. Serena confirms for the hundredth time that she's a dumbass, and then she marries psycho Dan, because LOGIC. WHAT.

Man, I don't even know. I'm not even mad, anymore, I lost that ability back in season 5, when I had to laugh, to stop myself from ripping my hair out. So, I took the same approach with this one, I guess. I laughed. I laughed at all of it and I will continue to laugh while I casually scroll tumblr for hilarious scenes in which Dan = Gossip Girl = WTF NO. That is all.

  • 1. Well it was better than The OC ending I will give it that. I think if all of this insaneness hadn't happened in the past 3 years like Dair and Chuck selling out Blair - this would have been the perfect finale but I honestly just watched it just because I felt like I owed it to my youth to finish watching this. Chair got married - yay. Still it can never beat the epicness of s2's finale and the ILY. Derena got married - yay. If Dan hadn't done all those awful things to her. I was hoping everything would be a dream sequence and we would pick up where s2 left off. My heart cried when I saw the flashback becoz come on, even at that point the show kind of acknowledged how awesome it was in the beginning....and that Rihanna song? Really. Her first song was NEVER a hit.

    2. Dan being Gossip Girl makes sense only if you remember Blair's quote that Serena was GG's first blast - so in a sense that kind of makes sense as to why Dan was Gossip Girl. But I liked how someone here said there could be a separate round table for this question...

    3. Blair married her pimp and Serena married her stalker. Thats all I have to say about that. Also NOOOOO! Scarter 4ever! Or Serena being Mrs. Nate Archibald and wife of the mayor (LOL).

    4. You should have made a question about which guest star you were most happy to see....I missed Agnes! Lol, I even missed Vanessa!

    5. B minus - because no Carter and Derena getting married. Ew

    • "Blair married her pimp and Serena married her stalker."

Yep, that about sums it up. Good riddance, Gossip Girl. :)

  • am i the only one that can't erase from her mind the image of ed with the wig, from the party scene?i mean that's what i remember from the whole episode!

      • sizzling hot!but it was sooooooo funny!and when i saw penn without his hair(hallelujas!!!!!!!!) i was like ''huh?they used time machine for all of them so successfully!!and chace looked cute, too!'' p.s.i miss chuck with his scarf and hair and attitude.:)

        • but his hair was actually season 2 hair. lol. He had more of a Caesar cut btw Chace's wig was hilarious. I miss Chuck's fashion but poor Ed that he can't wear ascot again but at least the fashion shall live on little Henry Bass.

  • I loved the finale. I knew that Dan was Gossip Girl ALL along. Well, I knew it was him or Jenny but then I thought it wasn't Jenny because she wasn't on the show anymore. I liked the component exposed, but, I hate HATE Ivy with a passion. I never understood her purpose, or Nate's little boo thing (don't remember her name) or Georgina. I never understood that.

I loved that Chuck & Blaire got married. I cried, call me sensitive but I was emotional because we witnessed their relationship flourish. I did like Serena & Dan getting married -- but I could have done without the five years later recap.

  • BTW can I say the cameos were well palyed particularly Kristin Bell's and my mouth gaped when Rachel walked in and then I was shocked to see Vanessa (as she along with Carter was said to not make an appearance due to their schedules).

This should have been two hour finale as the retrospective really didn't do much (except Chace on his mammy and Ed on the fact he can never wear ascots again). Also the Carrie Diaries commercials were too much. I guess my only problem was everything was to short.

Maybe cause I am weird I actually could see Nate running mayor (because he is dumb and natefused, I mean when they were high school I played a game of what they would become I claim Nate would be a doctor because it was so far fetch).

    • i agree with you.when they said 2 hours finalle i thought it would be a 2-hour episode!all the things that they said in the 1st hour wasn't new to me and i think any good GG fan knew all these facts.they could use this extra hour for explaining better the storyline instead of rushing it,like they did.and all these commercials with the Carrie Diaries drove me nuts!at some point i was like ''I DON'T CARE ABOUT THE CURLY-HEAD SOUTHERN GIRL THAT LIVES THE BIG DREAM,MAN!!!!!!MOVE ON DAMN IT!'' :p

      • I kept shouting "No one gives a shit!" at my tv as this show contradicts SATC. I recall Carrie talking about her first time and it wasn't special and I know this show would make it romantic and ish.. So guess what I am not watching Carrie Diaires (because that show should be on cable).

        • definatelly i won't watch the carrie diaries.i didn't even watch sex and the city, why start now?

  • Lololol um no writers sorry Dan was not GG throughout seasons 1 to 5 of your show, this is not a David Lynch movie! Clearly there is a gas leak in the writers room which has been worsening since 5x24, and by this finale they were in full hallucination mode. It is a serious OH&S issue and the CW should get onto it ASAP.

  • I feel like Dan being GG would've been amazing if there weren't so many plotholes and things that just don't make sense. I saw something on twitter where it said that what we should learn from this episode is that :you make your own fairytale. So I liked that, plus the whole lonely boy thing and the fact no one in the show is smart enough to write gossip girl DOES make sense. BUT I don't get why he would harm his sister, or his own relationships with Serena/blair etc, just for credibility.
And nate, mayor?of NEW YORK ?Hahahaa When i sad that scene I tried to think of universes where that would actually happen.
I didn't care so much for Blair&Chuck, the proposal was so weird to me. Yeah just propose to me with the ring/necklace around my neck. And uh..Weird kisses. I like derena but everything was rushed and poorly written. I like that rufus and lily didn't end up together. She deserves someone that is as evil and careless as serena's dad.
    The one person I really liked in this episode is JACK!! I like his sarcastic sense of humor, and he's just pure evil all the way you know, not like Chuck who stopped making sense a long time ago. And Georgina&jack makes so much sense;
Well goodbye Gossip girl. I will never forget those amazing first 2 seasons, and how you went from that to well pure garbage. But It was still fun to make fun of it.
