The Vampire Diaries ‘After School Special’ review: Breakneck Club

You guys, I just realized why I’ve been so frustrated with The Vampire Diaries. It’s not a show about good guys versus bad guys, not at all. It’s just a show about people murdering other people and double crossing everyone. I always knew that it was a soap opera, but I’ve been enlightened — it’s not just a romantic one, it’s in the leagues of Dallas and such. What more can you say about a show that asks you to root for someone who knowingly murdered an entire bar full of people for his own gain? Or that asks you to root for the guy who just heard his ex-girlfriend say she feels like a project and doesn’t like that, and then just decides to continue doing that anyway? The secret answer is that the show isn’t exactly asking you to root for any of that, because there’s always another plot twist waiting just a few seconds away. Forget that Stefan didn’t heed any of Elena’s emotional truth, because he’s about to team up with Rebekah against the others in Mystic Falls!

There’s a good reason for this episode to exist, I suppose. Everyone needs to hear the supposed secrets that they’re keeping from everyone else. However, I just watched “Once More, With Feeling,” about three weeks ago… and while that episode was also just about everyone airing their dirty laundry, at least they did it as a musical. Though, that’s not the issue with this episode of TVD. The real problem here is that we only got like half a new episode tonight. Rebekah locks everyone in a room so that they could all explain to viewers who forgot, or who are just casual viewers, what has happened on the season thus far. If I have any real complaints with this new hour, it’s that. And don’t get me wrong, Rebekah is a great character and she exposed everyone’s secrets in a typical Vampire Diaries fun-ness, but I know all of this.

And for the most part, so do all of the characters.

That said, I suppose we should discuss what was stated. Rebekah’s compulsion causes Elena to reveal that she is in love with Damon and she’s no longer “in” love with Stefan. Somehow, I feel that we already know this. Elena has had actual feelings for Damon for some time, and that feeling was obviously love for some time, too. That said, I don’t know if we should be taking Elena at her word. We don’t have any information that compulsion is greater than a sire bond. That said, the sire bond is a bit muddy at this moment, anyway. Would it not make Elena at least satisfied staying away from Damon knowing that’s what he wants? Or is that where the sire bond ends — she wants to be close to him because she actually loves him? So many questions.

Mainly, what this episode is… is moving towards the cure at what seems to be a breakneck pace (this episode solely), as opposed to last season which sort of split half of its season in two. And the way we get there is having all of our characters sort of competing in a supernatural rat race. Bonnie — whose dad apparently DOES exist, by the way — is toying with expression, something Stefan and Damon have decided to stay mum about, I’m guessing because they just want someone to find The Cure one way or another. Damon and Elena will decidedly work with Jeremy, at any costs, to grow the map. Will Elena be okay with how many people have had to die to just “save” or “fix” her? And now we have unlikely pairing Stefan and Rebekah coming together, fueled by “hate.” I can’t shake that Stefan and Rebekah don’t hate as much as they just want revenge. (“Now you know how I’ve felt for 900 years.”)

Which brings me back to the fact that whether or not it was always intentional, The Vampire Diaries really IS just a show about people with hazy moral compases racing towards the goal the season has set in front of them. I think a huge weight has been lifted. I’ve thought about it so much that I went around in a circle of analysis to my original stance. But I’m still expecting for an all-out, badass war.

Update: By the way, soap operas aren’t bad. I like me a good soap opera. I think it’s just time that I tweak my brain from what I want the show to be in my mind to what it actually is in execution, you know?

Bites:

  • This episode also continued the trend of having people actually reflect when characters die. In that sense, I’m glad Tyler got a moment to mourn his mother’s passing.
  • But still, Elena has the WORST manners when it comes to funerals.
  • AGENCY!!!! Was Damon’s phone call icky or not icky?
  • I was hoping that April and Shane being linked had something to do with her father and would make her… uh… useful, but alas.
  • Missed you, Beks.

  • Bonnie

Bonnie’s Dad came back to town and he( Rudy) cares about her and wants to protect her because he is her Father I loved that scene it was LONG over due.Shane just gave Bonnie a Witch talisman that once belonged to one of her Family Members. That is named Qetsyiah Her Witch talisman that is made for Human Bone . Where did Shane get that from? Bonnie did some Magic and it did not backfire on Bonnie at all it fucked April over but who cares about that not me .. Then Kol and Bonnie having some Eye Sex was Awesome . Bonnie tapped in to her new power and found it was a lot more then she is use to and that she will have to be more careful

    Tyler & Care

Was good I think he is going to need a lot more time to be sad and mad about his Mom and His Pack he lost them both in one night

I also like he tried to keep off from being the wolf long enough to keep his friends safe

Love the Forwood things we got

Care was strong this ep was there the Tyler and Stefan both the help out when she should

    Matt & Jeremy

Both Showed how hot they were like that they told Damon off a Little .I like there work out and them helping and being a friend

    Shane

Did not have a good Night Kol Got him tried to kill him then did kill him by impaleing but Bonnie was there to save his Ass . Shane also told some of the plans but I know there is a lot more he still has undercover.

    Stefan

What he Heard tonight was hard but he was a man tonight which is more then I can say about Damon He was cut to the bone tonight . Stefan had the balls and the back Bone to walk . He still loves Elena Yes He does with all his heart he loved that girl and he will always love her. But is he going to sit there and made her feel better about Lying to him no is he going to sit there with his heart cut out listing to her Sired bond her feelings no . Also like that He helped out Bonnie with April . He was there For care . Now what will Him and Rebekah are going to do ?

    Rebekah and Kol

Rebekah had a plan and she worked that thing for all it had and in the end she got one thing that she has been wanting Stefan let see if she can make stefan fall for her . Rebekah also is going after that cure Klaus better watch out . Kol doesn’t want Silas around is fearfull of him so that should tell us something . Also Kol and Rebekah make a good team

    Elena

ELENA IS IN LOVE WITH STEFAN BUT THE SIRE BOND HAS HIDDEN THAT FROM HER Is stilled Sired to Damon so whatever she says is PURE Bullshit. She will do what ever she thinks Mater Damon would want / Like her to do or say to make him happy. Elena And Damon like always keep being the same Sad , Fake, Pathetic and see through people they are .

    Damon

With his Sad , Fake, Pathetic ” love ” he has with Pod Elena
SIRED BOND LOVE ITS WHAT DAMON & ELENA DE IS MADE OF IT’S ALL SO FAKE

Damon is going to need some major work to de- loser him off . Damon as of late has been shown to be so less then , Pathetic , 2nd best , lower life form, pitiful,Deplorable , not a good brother and a lier that is what the show has put on Damon
He can take the bond off at anytime but him dragging this sad little show out longer is making him look bad and Weaker every day it goes on

  • LOOK YOU NEED TO STOP SAYING TVD IS LIKE DALLAS . DALLAS IS/ WAS A GOOD SHOW WITH GREAT STORY TELLING AND THEY USE THERE WHOLE CAST AND DALLAS HAS A PLOT TO THE SHOW . If TVD is anything its like a Very Bad B-movie from the 70's or 60's

  • Can you point out Elena actually contradicted herself this episode. First off before the sex she just said she was confused and didn't know what her feelings for Damon were, then after the sex while talking to Caroline and Bonnie she was saying she "thought" she was falling in love with Damon. Now she saying she was "in" love Damon hence the reason she jump his bones not less than twenty four hours after Stefan dump her. I call bullshit.

Also let's not insult Dallas as they can obviously remember ish that went down in the soap from the 80's and continuity ain effed but tvd seems to forget stuff they wrote in the last episode all the damn time.

    • ITA she did contradicted herself this ep.
Also Why did she not want Stefan to forget her? If she "loves" Damon ? why would Elena care if Stefan did not know her ?
saying TVD is like a Soap or Dallas is a insult to all those great shows who knew how to write good TV with logic and told very good stories TVD has not told a story in a long time ( Season 2 was the last time ) its all about plot points with them now

    • I got the idea that from a writing standpoint it would be pointless for Stefan to forget his feelings for Elena b/c then he would have less things to angst, moan and groan about. And perhaps Elena wants people to suffer and be miserable while she has some semblance of a happy romance? Anyway, if we're going forward with a legit DE pairing, which I personally cannot support b/c of the sire bond, then it doesn't make much sense for Stefan and Elena to continue meddling in each other's lives. The writers need to decide. Either it's okay for Elena to move onto the next one in less than 24 hours or it isn't and Stefan is somehow justified in his feelings. Personally I understand where he's coming from but it just feels like he's angsting and making things solely about him and his feelings when in reality Elena is in a bad position, assuming she's still under Damon's influence.

It almost seems like that girl from New Orleans didn't even matter if people are still going on like DE isn't contrived and only feasible with a sire bond. I get the feeling that the girl may not have been freed from her bond. She seemed absolutely miserable when she was being left behind.

  • I never get the idea from a fandom standpoint that people
root for characters while acknowledging that they've done bad things to
other people. I don't think that killing sisters, mothers and possibly
even fathers has ever put a damper on fandom love for characters like
Damon, Stefan and Klaus. Rape and abuse is hardly ever acknowledged by
the writers, in fact the writers don't even want you to say the word
"abuse" in reference to this show, so I don't think most fans would
treat these issues quite as seriously. At the end of the day it's about male character worship for the most part.

  • I think we have been discusing that the TVD characters aren't "good" people for a while!!! And it makes sense also! At first maybe they were, but they used to be humans also most of them! Now only matt is, and I think it's well done that vampirism has changed them!
I mean, it's a show about vampires! It ok for them to be bad, isnt it?? Otherwise we would be complaining that they are too soft (whitch they still are sometimes!) and not acting like vamps!
And I agree that its a soap opera.... and its a pitty... The whole time rebekah was compeling them to tell the truth was kind of lame... I hate when they do that!

    • No, it's totally true, we've been discussing how the characters have fuzzy moral compases for a while now, but for the most part they have been making adjustments to that this season — and then they sort of undid that with this episode. Damon went right back to murdering people for his own benefit and Stefan just decided he doesn't really care what Elena thinks, etc. And you're right, it's good that becoming a vampire changes people, the problem is that we're still supposed to be rooting for them even though they've done nothing but prove to us they don't deserve our support. But when you think of it in terms of just plot twist after plot twist, then it just becomes a fun show about people breaking other people's necks and you know what, that's cool. It's fun and there ain't nothin' wrong with that.

  • After this episode, I have just one thing to say - I used to hate Elena because she was stupid, now I hate her because is still stupid and indulging in it. Like srsly, she feels sad when she is with Stefan because he makes her feel like a project in need of fixing yet she feels happy about Damon wanting the do THE EXACT SAME THING to her? Ughhhhhh!. Also I have to disagree with Kol - Becks is not worse than Klaus at torturing because 90% of the reason Becks decided to do do this in the first place was to get back at Elena - so OF COARSE she would compel all this awkward info out of her - girls, we are all like that. But when Klaus tortures he does sort of takes a neutral side and makes them all confess out the true feelings while having no emotional interest in all of this (in a way, Becks's torture was driven by jealousy and revenge, Klaus just gets pleasure out of this, no revenge necessary). Anyway, overall, my point is - so glad Stefan walked out on Elena - I hope he finally realized what a selfish and stupid chick she is.

  • This episode pissed me off SO, SO much. The entire thing was contrived around getting Elena to admit that she's in love with Damon. Did we really need an entire episode for that? And one moment, Stefan is willing to have her completely erased from his mind and the next he still needs to find the cure to figure out if she really loves his brother? These motivations don't make sense at all. I am so disappointed in this show. I feel like it's heading down the path of GG and after that debacle, I refuse to be held hostage to a CW show again. If TVD doesn't improve by the end of this season, I'm out.

    • It makes sense in a way. If he can't get Rebecca to erase the memories and release him from the hightened pain of a heartbreak, then He would rather know the truth, you know I mean? It's better than always wondering if it's the sire bond or not. That could result in lifetime regrets...the "what if she really did love me?"...."Why didn't try to find out the truth"

That's the way I see it at least ^^

    • girl why you think i only do Bonnie's clips now. I too sworn that no other CW show would ever hold me hostage so TVD was on probation...meaning i would watch everything on youtube clips and then my poc death toll meter overloaded and Hybrid Chris broke the camel's back and I really thought of making a twitter account or writing to the CW just to say all this stuff is racist and I'm this close to really hoping someone tells Al Sharpton's annoying ass to put you on blast (see I was that mad).
I don't mind the killing if people stop trying to claim it just vampires being moral in shade of grey or in the right...most of their killings are most definitely in the wrong. Also for a show that uses the word a humanity, they seem to be able shrug it off easy and let the murder roll off their back like no seems conflicted about it. Maybe if they stop with the humanity talk than I think viewers like myself wouldn't be frustrated with these vampires who then in turn start crying about their life being in jeopardy.
I do think since both of the extremes they make sense cause really Stefan can only be free (logically) if he in human form Elena can admit she loves Damon more than him.
Damon just disappoints me in general they talk all about how Damon was going to be screw you Elena this season...he jumped her the moment she was free...He acting like some damn eager puppy and it not cute, I do think Damon has lost his groove.
Also can I say it made little sense to use Matt for Jeremy to train to kill vampires...so. yeah. People are talking about Deremy bonding or even Mamon...this fandom is ridiculous beyond belief.
BTW Michael what was your opinion on TVD getting its ass handing to them at the PCA's, tumblr blew the hell up?

      • this is cacherr1's who wrote that post not Monika, think I accidentally copy and paste Monika's name in the wrong place. that's weird.

      • Yeah, I was not buying the Deremy bonding at all. Dude is starving them and then forcing Jeremy's hand once again. Damon can't do anything but control other people. Damon and Stefan are but two sides to the same coin, their treatment of Jeremy has been the same, with little regard for what this pursuit of the cure is doing to him.

    • This episode was absolute filler for the exact reasons that you've described. Didn't get shit done. For mindless entertainment I could watch reruns of the Animaniacs or Home Movies, which are very well written cartoons. Cartoons are better than this tripe.

I know that not everything can be as well written as GoT, Archer, Blood Ties, etc., esp if the source material is very lacking, but it seems an insult to the intelligence of young adult audiences that this is the best the writers can come up with.

I really think someone should do a spoof of the show. It would be so funny. I know a person like Nostalgia Critic would tear this show a new one, even with his occasionally annoying antics.

  • I don't think Stefan is ignoring Elena's feelings.I feel like he's hurt and he kinds of owe to himself to find out if Elena truly stopped loving him or was it the sire bond. When you've been through so much with someone, it's just hard to realize hey 'She likes my brother now'..I just hate the way they introduced the whole Delena thingy. It's not believable at all to me, Now when I see Elena all I see is a whiny litte puppet. What happened to being strong? And here we all were thinking Vampire Elena would be badass. I find myself even forgetting she's one actually.Anyway, moving on. At this point can we all just Make Rebecca a regular? She freaking rock! And her idea of turning klaus into a human is brilliant !The most powerful man on earth reduced to a simple human, I want to see that!
I also hate what they've done to Damon's character. In the first 3 seasons, I didn't want him with elena but he was my favorite character. Now he's just back to being Elena's puppet and being selfish and not caring about who gets hurt. Oh well, did he ever stopped doing that anyway?
-I've always found tyler a bit of a douche, annoying but lately..Hmm me likey :p
    -I can't take Jeremy seriously.
-I actually thought April would become Rebecca's one friend.but nope! back to being irrelevant.

All in all, this season is really quite deceiving. I'm a big big fan of the show but this season is a complete let down. Too many stories, too many plot holes, too many characters, too messy !!! And I don't feel the same way about the killing as a few of you do. It's Fantasy, they're vampires, not humans. If they didn't kill anybody, ever, this show wouldn't have a point. No one is telling me to root for klaus, I decide to! Why? because I realize he's fictional so I'm able to see beyond the fact that he's a mass murderer and appreciate his humor, his brilliance(always one step ahead) because that's what entertains me, and That's mostly what I'm looking for : entertainment ( and maybe a few HUMAN qualities like loyalty and such.)

    • So true about April. It was funny how she immediately become a little helper when Bonnie started asking her to do things. I find it hard to take her or Jeremy seriously when neither of them are really in control of their situations. Same goes for Matt. It's just all about the vamps and their little games and drama. And while we shouldn't expect Elena to be badass for the sake of being badass she's extremely powerless as a vampire. Perhaps even moreso than when she was human. And I agree that Rebekah's plan is perhaps the best. She could even want the cure to restore her own humanity, but clearly it's best if Klaus becomes human b/c then it's possible for everyone in his line to then become human once more. Or at least that's what I would imagine could happen. And then Tyler could go back to being a regular werewolf. Also, how come Rebekah could compel Tyler? I thought he would be immune since he's a hybrid . . . or something. I don't know. Though arguably by being one of the oldest vampires Rebekah is pretty damn strong.

  • I wouldn't compare it to Dallas the show just isn't that good lol...Cant compare it to Buffy The Vampire Slayer cause that would be insulting Joss Whedon.I'm tired of the SB,BS and all that it entails and the whole lets discuss it and get confessions was just making the audience out to be so stupid we need a reminder.Who are we trying to convince more the Stelena or Delena fans. The obvious writing and character flaws aside it's the plot twist after plot twist and lets kill off another parent that is boring me.I mean really you have to do the same old shit over and over again.Sorry but TVD is turning into a snooze fest I hope they get their shit together soon.

  • this episode was not good at all, except damon's face when elena told him that she loves him,he reminded me of the racoon thanking god meme.i mean i laughted my butt off!he even looked up to the sky!but unfortunatelly it goes down to ''blair waldorf show'' emm i mean gossip girl, whene no plots existed except blair's love life.i give it a C.it would be D- but they actually showed bonnie's dad!he is real everybody!hooray!

      • ahahaahhahhahah!you're right!he literally looked up to the sky and smiled!it was amazing and hilarious at the same time!and forgive me for saying this-maybe it's because i'm single for too long :p-when the said the speach and finished it with the ''come to me'' i got chills.laughing and chills at the same time?lol
