The Vampire Diaries 3.12 ‘The Ties That Bind’ review: VHarmony

Okay, if you guys have been reading my reviews for some time: you know how much love I have for this show. I saw tweets linking to my last review asking if that person and I were watching the same show. Believe me, we are. It’s just that these past few episode have not been jiving well with me. (Then again they were probably a Damon and Elena fan and I made it clear that I still believe in Stefan and Elena.) Anyway, on to the review…

Either I’ve been delusional these past two and a half seasons and I’m just beginning to realize it or it’s actually happening now, but it appears that The Vampire Diaries will stop at nothing to just give people love interests. When Elena and Bonnie go meet her mom, they’re greeted by that actor that looks like Cuba Gooding Jr’s brother that used to be on One on One, on the same network that Girlfriends used to be on which was somewhat a funny coincidence, and Elena makes googly eyes at him. And then when they find out he’s not Bonnie’s relative, she makes suggestive googly eyes at Bonnie, like “Oh, hook up with him, gurl!”

What? Are you kidding me? What is happening here? Does Elena not realize that Bonnie’s about to reunite with her mother for the first time — ever!? Does she not realize that the reason they’re there is to understand why a coffin is shut tight and contains vampires? What is wrong with her? And what is wrong with this show? I guess my cap from last week wasn’t that off.

Bonnie doesn’t need a love interest. Are you… she broke up with Jeremy like 2 weeks ago (in show time). What are you doing? Goodness. Please, show, just stick to the story here. Your strong suit is going full force with a moving plot. Perhaps it’s because this is the slowest the show has ever moved, this coffin story, that’s gotten my underwear in a bunch. I hope I just read Elena’s faces incorrectly.

Well, as you know, it’s no secret that I haven’t been a fan of this second half of the season. But thankfully, that was just a short blip in the episode. And I quite enjoyed the other romantic interests problems.

For example, Stefan and Elena’s scene was heartbreaking — and it proves my point from last week, that Stefan isn’t just going around being reckless and acting crazy. He didn’t even do anything to Jamie, really, once Elena was all “Do you even know how bad you’ve gotten ahhhhhhhh!!!!!!” Just, Elena… god. Anyway, besides who cares about Jamie at this point? I love how the show was being all dramatic when the woman who abandoned Bonnie, that we’ve never seen, was panicking about a guy, who we just met and don’t give a shit about, might die. And Bonnie’s mom’s reason for leaving is that she wanted to live as a woman, not a witch… after her powers were already gone…? I don’t.

I was happy, however, when Dr. Fell vervain’d Damon and siphoned his blood. Finally someone’s finding out about that secret. Imagine what could happen if it went mainstream. But then… Alaric just willfully offered up every secret ever. Um. Dr. Fell wasn’t exactly cleared of being a psycho killer. As far as I’m concerned, that theory is still on the table. You don’t… just… tell her about the magic ring! What? She asked if you were alive because of the vampire blood, your answer should have just been “yes.” You’re thinking with the wrong head.

I don’t really read that many other reviews of the show, so I don’t know if anyone else has really been affected by this second half of the season as I have been… but, well, I know that people can be quite forgiving of this show because it’s usually just so amazing. Perhaps I’ve just been crabby since the new year. Or perhaps I’m not watching the same show.

But there was at least one highlight: Caroline, her dad, and Tyler. How ridiculously… normal was that? Her dad was just protecting her from her high school boyfriend. I mean, he’s a werewolf-vampire hybrid who asked for help from his siring of a bloodthirsty villain… but still! When he was in the hospital telling Tyler he won’t let him see Caroline unless he breaks the siring, it was just so… funny, but in a good way. (I mean, I guess you can make the argument that we’ve seen Tyler change an innumerable amount of times with people watching him going “Ack! Tyler! Noooooo!!!! TYLER!!!!” but whatever.)

But nothing made me happier than when Elijah ripped the heart out of that hybrid. Thank goodness. The plot can go somewhere now.

OH AND YOU GUYS. ELENA HAD A PLAN… AND IT WORKED. Did you notice that? I mean, it was like a mini-plan, but she’s working on it. Pretty soon she’ll be making big plans! And they’ll pan out. How insane is that? Obviously this is the most shocking part of the episode.

What did you think of the episode? Am I just not watching the same show as you? Did you realize I didn’t mention Klaus nor hardly mentioned Damon at all in this review? Sound off!

  • I saw everyone else tweets about the show so you didn't miss you anything to me. Thankful I stopped watching it a long time ago about 2 are 3 episodes in the season it just felt like you said off to me

    • I thought 3.01-3.09 were really solid. If you read my reviews of all those episodes, they're basically love letters. But something is definitely feeling really off to me. Today, I was basically just waiting for The Secret Circle to begin.

  • I think the episodes are getting a bit boring as the show goes on :/ it's quite upsetting actually.

    • Ugh, I'm not a fan of these last three episodes where they've basically focused just on the love interests. It's really upsetting to me.

  • First of all Bonnie's future lovaaa is the kid from Cousin Skeeter. That is all

Also, I am so confused by Bonnie's family. Did she or did she not have the same last name as her grandma? (I'm too lazy to look it up). Her witchy-ness comes from her mothers side though, right?
Also, when Klaus told the witch spirits that he had things set to kill of the last of the witch race, didn't he mean Cousin Skeeter kid? So aren't him and Bonnie related? WHY IS THIS STORYLINE SO CONFUSING TO ME?

    • HAHAHAAA!!! I only mention One on One because it was on UPN just like Persia White's Girlfriends!!!

      And I don't… ugh… this show at the moment…

  • But them again I forgot ELIJAH'S BACK! So I think that's the only thing that will keep me watching :/

    • Yes!!! I think the plot will finally… you know, go somewhere now!!!

I think we're spoiled because usually the plots move so quickly and this one is taking forever and a day.

  • I think one big shocked for me during this show was when Bonnie's mom revealed that Elena's parents knew she was a doppelganger and all of that. I didn't see it coming. I haven't had an issue with this season up until tonight. I was bored, I had trouble paying attention. Klaus in the witch house was interesting because he basically made the witches back down from him. There was also a few good one liners here and there. Highlight of the show...ELIJAHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!! AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!! IT'S BEEN A LONG TIME COMING. BE STILL MY HEART! Damon deserves ALLLLLLLLLLLL the mothatruckin awards for pulling that dagger out!

    • HAHAHAHAA!!!! YES!!! Thank god he pulled that dagger out!!!

I'm really glad you mentioned that about Elena's parents knowing she was the doppelganger. It was said with in passing that I basically didn't even realize it was anything major. Does that mean Jenna was the sole outsider of the town; she seems to be the only person that didn't know anything. (Oh and Matt… but…)

  • As far as I am concerned, this season has pretty much been a bust. (Except for the amazingness of one Paul Wesley who deserves all of the awards ever.) And the lazy writing in this episode made me rage. But then the last twenty seconds happened and my faith was restored.

The king has returned, and hopefully with him he will bring decent plot, more BAMF-ness (lol duh, it's Elijah), and make Elena likable again. (Seriously, I loved Elena second season, especially when she was with Elijah. I think he's good for her. Show, if she HAS to have a love interest, can it be Elijah? Or, at least, can they be BFFs? Please?)

    • Paul Wesley has always been the most under-appreciated actor on this show, I really don't understand why. Anyway, I've liked this season… back in 2011, 2012 has been sort of eh.

But Elijah, please make it awesome.

  • I think that these past couple of episodes, while not necessarily plot furthering, needed to be done. You couldn't just have 5 minutes dedicated to the fact that Jeremy was leaving Mystic Falls, or have described how badly Klaus wanted the coffins if you hadn't spent like 3 episodes on it. I think these are just quote unquote "filler/explanation episodes", and now that Elijah is back, we can see the actual plot go somewhere.

    • I don't disagree. I think for the story they wanted to tell, they probably had to spend time developing Elena's feelings for Damon and whatnot… but then they just focused on love interests. I just don't think I'm a fan of that.

  • I instantly thought of One on One when i saw him.

I have to say the one major thing i was dissapointed about in this episode was that Elijah didnt say 'OMG'

    Elijah though <3

Also i felt really bad for stefan...i mean sure he is being a little crazy at the moment and i suppose yes, he did basically play with elena's life but......man, those eyes when she told him about the kiss. Heartbraking does not do justice! I think the guy needs a break.

    • HAHAHAHAH "I believe the word is Oh em gee." Anyway, yes, he best make it amazing!

And I believe you and all of Twitter was writing "Poor Stefan" or at least the part that isn't insanely "shipping" Delena.

      • Well i dont really ship either way if im honest since they have both been a bit too irrational to make good bf material in my opinion. Plus, i watched the show then read the books so dont really have the attachment most people do because of that.

Im totally all for Alaric anyways.....if not just for the fact his hair has improved a ridiculous amount since legally blonde!
