Just a short review of tonight’s new episode below…
It’s a good thing that I’m greatly entertained by The Following, or this episode may have ranked a bit lower for me. I think I was influenced by my longing for the pilot episode and thus that may have affected my grading, and perhaps the same is happening here. But there truly is a lot of somewhat laughable things that distracted me a bit: the obvious Poe-masked attacker; how inexplicably light on his feet Jordy is; that the police officer he murdered couldn’t yell out for like the 10 seconds it took Jordy to approach him after he was spotted; actually, can NO ONE scream?; having sex with the door wide open while a child is nearby; the not-at-all-subtle “nevermore”s everywhere; or maybe the fact that the first thing Kevin Bacon told The Ex-Wife was to make their kid important to Serial Killer and the first thing she says is, “Where’s my son?!” And then she, like, approached him. You know, a freaking insanely dangerous serial killer. That guy.
I think my favorite of all, though, is when Kevin Bacon and co. find Cougar-Mom’s disastrously decomposed body and the cop goes, “She’s been dead for a while.” REALLY!? Oh, show. You were hilarious at times during this episode.
But whatever, I’m giving the show a free pass on account of me being very entertained regardless during tonight’s hour. Even though I feel as if we’re veering into a territory of second-guessing absolutely everyone’s motives to the point that we’re going to predictably and successfully pinpoint characters as part of the gothic romanticism cult. Though I think that chapter two (ha!) of the series certainly did help explain a couple of the characters’ motivations going forward, rather than the fact that Joe is an extremely charismatic guy and somehow has built a following based on just that alone.
Well, here’s hoping next week’s outing is stronger than tonight’s — which, by the way, I still think was completely entertaining. I watched it with my family, to boot, (I know, great family fun fare) and we were all equally enthralled. The show definitely has that going for it, I have to admit. And as of yet, the aforementioned gaffs do not take me out of the verisimilitude of the show. I just hope that the reasoning strengthens a bit in upcoming episodes.
