MM: Now what about Kieran, is there any chance of those two rekindling anything. Will we be getting our love triangle back, or are we just gonna stick with the friend situation?
HR: I think Kieran and Brenna are great friends, and there’s no romance there anymore. Been there, tried that- didn’t work out. (laughs) But the fact that they can be friends is really cool and it’s really fun to do the scenes post Kieran and Brenna being a romantic item.
MM: Now the Chasing Lifers have really taken to #Grenna, which is your ‘ship’ name. I’m sure you’re well aware! (laughs) How has that feedback, regarding the relationship, been on Twitter? Do you and Gracie ever talk about all the love that’s thrown your way on social media?
HR: Yeah! The Grenna feedback is sweet and endearing. I love reading everyone’s comments. I’ve gotten messages from girls saying they wouldn’t be dating their girlfriend, if it wasn’t because of Grenna, and I don’t know if it’s because they felt more comfortable or it gave them the courage to ask their significant other out, but that’s been really fun to see real life Grenna stories.
MM: That’s so amazing. It must feel so good to be able to pave the way for people.
HR: Yeah, it does! It feels so good. I think it’s my favorite part of the live-tweeting and social media, just hearing real people’s stories.
MM: Do you have any weekly Chasing Life rituals? Do you watch the show with friends and family, or do you text along with the cast or anything like that?
HR: Yes! Lately, I have been going over to my friend Abhi’s (Sinha) house, he plays Danny- he gets the East Coast feed. So if I wanna tweet and not go into the office, then I get to do it there. And it’s really fun because we all hang out and random cast members will come by if they can and we’ll catch up and eat a bunch of snacks and get to watch the episode. It’s fun to watch with people who you don’t normally have scenes with, because since we filmed the episode so long ago, you kind of forget what happens in every episode for other characters. It’s kind of like watching it for the first time- I mean I am- but knowing what happens for the first time. So that’s really fun to be able to support each other while watching.
MM: Do you ever feel awkward watching yourself on screen, if there’s a kissing scene or a very emotional scene? Do you ever feel strange seeing yourself up there, or are you able to detach and say, “Hey, I did a great job”?
HR: A little bit of both. I realized that I do a really weird facial expression when I’m watching myself sometimes. My face will just freeze in a really weird way, because I’m nervous about watching myself. (laughs) Then I become aware of it, and I’m surrounded by other people and it’s really awkward the way I’m just staring at the TV with this bizarre facial expression.
MM: (laughs) So Brenna has become widely known for being “label-free”, although people try to put her in one category or the other. Do you think she’ll ever find the need to establish her sexuality as a definitive term?
HR: I don’t really think that she will feel the need. I think she’s already established it in a way where she’s not establishing it, if that makes any sense? She’s kind of told everyone this is me, I love people for people, not because of their gender, and I think she’ll stick with that because that’s the coolest thing about her that she sees the beauty in people no matter what they are.
MM: Right. I mean in the last episode she kind of put her foot down, in the sense that just because Greer is having issues does not mean she’s just going to abandon her. I think that really sparked something in Italia’s character, April, that maybe she shouldn’t give up on Leo (Scott Michael Foster) so quickly?
HR: Yeah, it’s funny how you can learn from the younger ones. When I was 17, all of my older friends would ask me for dating advice. I never understood it, because I never had a boyfriend, but now I understand. A young mind is so fresh and simple, because you haven’t gotten caught up in all the drama and the hardships yet, so you see life differently. I think that April can learn a lot from Brenna.
