MM: So now, is there any hope that Donnie will turn out to be a clone. I mean, just imagine nine Donnie’s twerking. We have to make that happen!
KB: [Laughs.] Only in dreams. Only in dreams. I really don’t ever see Donnie being a clone. I think that would be funny for a dream sequence. I would totally be up for that, but it would never actually happen.
MM: Speaking of twerking, you know I have to bring up your infamous dance scene. It’s pretty iconic now. How was filming that scene. Was it awkward for you and Tatiana? Was there any preparation? Was it just having a good time and just doing it?
KB: It was just all good times. It was all dreams-come-true, good times. Like rolling around in your underwear on a bed with just piles of money? How? I mean who wouldn’t want to do that? That’s a dream come true right there. To be, basically, to be in a rap video and just be so ridiculous, I don’t think Tat or I ever once had a reservation about it. It was just so stupid and so fun. It wasn’t even stupid. It was stupid fun. It was just the best ever. It was one of the best things I’ve ever filmed in my life. Like just ridiculous. And no reservations. Tat’s a very, she just throws herself into everything. And I try follow and do the same. Working with her can be quite an inspiration that way. And I’m kind of fearless when it comes to, I don’t know, being in my underwear? [Laughs.] I don’t have any problems getting myself out there. Even in a roomful of men, of men and women, it doesn’t really matter. It’s just, “Let’s let go and have this ridiculous fun time. Just try to make some television history.”
MM: I think you did, for sure.
KB: [Laughs.] Thanks.
MM: I would imagine people at events or cons have you signing underwear and all that good stuff. What would you say is the strangest fan interaction you’ve had?
KB: None of them have been strange. They’ve all been lovely and wonderful. I love the fans. I love talking to them. I love connecting in person. At the end of season one, when I was a baddie. I was revealed to be a monitor this whole time. I remember I was at a store and the cashier looked at me and said, “I know you from somewhere.” And I said, “Uh… I don’t know.” “No, I know you from somewhere. Where do I…? [Gasps.] Oh, you bastard!” He got really mad at me for a second. I was like, “Oh… god…” [Laughs.] Getting that between seasons one and two was really funny, people just sort of eyeballing me and then lightheartedly calling me a bastard or something like that. That was fun. I had a fan send me underwear in the mail, but it was brand new underwear that she thought I might like, which I thought was funny. It was from the Netherlands and it had little windmills all over it. Still have it, of course. And then even last night I went with a friend to see Pitch Perfect 2, because that is a guilty pleasure. It’s funny, I don’t enjoy Glee that much, but I loved Pitch Perfect 1. It was a guilty pleasure film that I only ever watch once in a while by myself when I just kind of want to laugh and hear some really fun, cheesy, awesome music. So I went to Pitch Perfect 2 last night and I was like, “There’s not many people in the theater. Great.” Then when I get out, there were two girls. One was waiting for me there, like, “Are you…? Oh, my god it is you! We took a picture of you in the theater watching the movie!” [Laughs.] And they waited for me afterwards to take a picture with me. It was really funny. I started turning red. I was so embarrassed. I was like, “Oh, I thought I’d get away with being here in public with a friend.” And totally got busted. I thought that was really funny. The fans are creative and interesting in how they approach you and interact with you. And I love that. And I try to be respectful to it as well.
MM: Clone Club went to San Diego Comic Con. Any word if you guys are coming to New York Comic Con, because I’m hoping to see your killer moves in person?
KB: [Laughs.] I would love to come to New York Comic Con! It’s in the fall, right?
MM: In October, yeah. So hopefully you guys will come.
KB: I would love to come this year. I hope to come this year. We’re always filming at that point. And our schedules are usually pretty crazy. I don’t know. I’ll try to put the bee in the bonnet on that one. I’ll try to put a message into BBC America’s ear and see if he can steal us away for the weekend because that would be so much fun. I would love to come. We don’t do an east coast Comic Con. We need to do an east coast Comic Con.
MM: Seriously! You’re neglecting the east coast peeps!
KB: I know!
MM: And I need some dancing in the underwear. I see all these videos of you dancing in your underwear at cons, and I am not there!
KB: [Laughs.] It’s not that good.
MM: [Laughs.]
KB: Believe me. Trust me. It’s terrible.
MM: Oh, stop. I’ll be the judge. Now, are you binge-watching any shows right now? Anything that you can’t miss?
KB: I just moved, and so I don’t have Internet or cable at my new place. I’ve just been watching DVDs on my laptop. So I’ve been interrupted in watching Penny Dreadful, which I really, really enjoy. I watched Game of Thrones this season, which was pretty good. It wasn’t my favorite season, but it was pretty good. I need to binge-watch Vikings season three, I haven’t watched it yet. And remember the TV series Rome?
MM: Yeah!
KB: I just found season two. And I was like, I’ve never watched season two. So just yesterday—I’ve been busy, I’ve only been able to watch it while I’m eating breakfast, but… [laughs]. I just started watching season two of Rome, and I really effin’ dig it because I’m a history nerd and I find ancient Rome fascinating, and blah blah blah blah blah. So yeah, those are the shows that I’m binge-watching right now.
MM: To kind of wrap things up, tell us why people should watch Orphan Black if people are newbies?
KB: Because it’s original, and it’s unique, and it tells a story that—while it may be science fiction—it’s inherently human. I think the writers try to cover most angles of life, at least in North America. I think everybody can relate to somebody on this show, whether that’s one of the clones or one of the auxiliary characters. It’s unique. It’s not a remake of anything. It’s creative. It’s beautifully shot, so it looks good too. It’s slick, it’s got the thriller pace to it, and it’s accessible to people who aren’t sci-fi fans, which I think is really important. I think it’s tough to sell on people at first, but when they start watching it, they get hooked right away and they don’t get caught up in too much science fiction. Yeah, that’s why. It’s a helluva ride.
