Supporting Actresses in a Drama
Christine Baranski, The Good Wife
There’s an episode of The Good Wife when Diane becomes part of a love triangle, and she was AWESOME in it. Baranski’s character is this uptight do-it-right lawyer, but in that episode, she let go. And it was SO good. She may not deliver the same dramatic performances that her female colleagues, Margulies and Pangabi, do. But there are moments in the show when she steals their thunder. And that’s saying a lot.
Michelle Dockery, Downton Abbey
Ever since this British import started airing in the US, Maggie Smith has been the one getting all the credit and all the nominations, because, let’s face it, she’s MAGGIE SMITH. But no performance on that show is short of AMAZING. Dockery deserves the recognition this year.
Christina Hendricks, Mad Men
The actress I REALLY want in this category is Christina Hendricks. MY GOD. How compelling was she in “The Other Woman”? She prostituted herself but was still SO Joan about it. Amazing. The other actresses would just be the cherry on top.
Megan Hilty, Smash
Her performance as ambitious actress Ivy on Smash may be a bit too theatrical, but the execution still played out undeniably well onscreen. Hilty’s parallel to the series’ muse Marilyn Monroe did not go unnoticed, either. And even then, Hilty’s performance allowed us to empathize with Ivy. Plus, we just really love her voice.
Bethany Joy Lenz, One Tree Hill
Once again, yeah right. Not even Lenz submits herself (which is why we put her here, we didn’t know if she’d be a lead or supporting) because she knows it will never happen. Especially not for a show as ridiculous as One Tree Hill can be sometimes. But even during its 37th kidnapping storyline, Bethany Joy Lenz’s (always effortless) performance in the middle of the last season — and that voiceover monologue — absolutely killed me. There were tears. And if you didn’t feel emotional, ice water must flow through your veins.
Caterina Scorsone, Private Practice
Caterina Scorsone has made me bawl this year more than any actor on TV. Repaying me for all those tears gone is giving her a nomination.
Honorable Mentions
Morena Baccarin, Homeland
Rose Byrne, Damages
Emilia Clarke, Game of Thrones
